How many camping trips in a year?

We’ve just come back from first proper camping trip since having kids (when not camping with friends, done that a few times) and we all had a great time.

Just wondered how many camping trips people manage to fit in during the season (I feel the cold so only looking at summer camping for now) I’m already planning for Summer 2022!

2 max. Of 3 or 4 nights each. I guess we may do longer one day but I find it quite hard work, we do all love it but it’s not really a rest, especially when the kit comes home wet.

I tend to try and squeeze in 3 weekends a year alongside abroad trips away (precovid) and this year self catered for a week

Next year we will have a 6 month old baby so will have a weekend practice in the garden before booking anything

Depends on how much stuff you take.
We used to go 3-4 times in summer. But would take a small tent, basic burner and equipment, stay relatively locally, go for 1-2 nights and get takeaways, meal deals etc breakfast was always just things like croissant and coffee. Easy to store. Would just take the instant coffee, powdered milk etc

We went for a week twice a year, Easter and October half term. Took way more stuff with us and the big tent. Wouldn't bother with that for 1 or 2 nights.

This is what I was thinking! We got back on Tuesday and only just about got everything clean and dry after having to pack up with wet tent.

I don’t think 2 nights is long enough as we need basically the same kit whether we are there 2 or 6 nights, DP (and me to a certain extent) will only enjoy it if comfortable. Night 1 is dreadful for sleep, by night 4 we’re all out like a light and lie in! Dc are 4 and 7 so I guess things may change if (when??) they get more helpful.

2 or 3. And usually do 3 nights, we did 5 nights in France a few years ago and it was a bit too long.

ShingleBeach · 27/08/2021 08:28

3 x 3 nights this year.

Bimblybomeyelash · 27/08/2021 08:32

3 trips of 2 or 3 nights is all we manage. I know plenty of people who manage a lot
more, but they are more organised and more hardy than I am!

MrsPworkingmummy · 27/08/2021 08:35

We go 3 to 5 times a year, usually for 4 to 7nights at a time. It depends on whether we have other holidays booked. We have a big air tent and always book electric hook up so we do camp comfortably.

ILoveAnOwl · 27/08/2021 08:37

In a normal year we'd do a long holiday (10-14 days) and then 2 or 3 weekend trips.

This year I've only managed 1 three night trip. I've really missed it 😭

Chilver · 27/08/2021 08:39

3 trips: one week long (next year booked for 10 nts though), one weekend and one 3 nights.

MagicBee · 27/08/2021 08:42

We've been camping 5 times this year, some shorter and some longer trips. We love it, hoping to squeeze in more next year!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/08/2021 08:43

This year 4 total, but only DH will have gone on all of them. (One was just DH and I, and he's taking DDs with his mate and his DDs this weekend). All weekend trips. We usually do 1 long and a few weekends, but avoided this year since we didn't fancy the overcrowding.

Tent is an Air tent so quick to get up and down. We can set up fully and pack up in around half an hour... I've seen set ups that reassemble holiday cottages with sofas, gazebos, beds, kitchens etc. We barely spend any time in the tent (except night time) so a lit of that will be pointless for us.

JustMarriedBecca · 27/08/2021 15:19

Air tent this year has meant we've had a few trips including our annual holiday over the summer.
One weekend June
4 night trip July
10 nights August (over two sites)
Another this weekend for August Bank holiday.

I'd not camp earlier than May bank holiday or later than mid September

Speckledy · 27/08/2021 15:26

So far this year we've done 2x3 night trips, 1x2 night and 1x7 night. Might try and fit in one more weekend in Sep/Oct depending on the weather. Children are 10 and 7 and we have a van to sleep in but it's not a proper camper conversion so still have to take stove/coolbox/storage and a big tent-like awning for all that stuff to live in.

Countrydiary · 27/08/2021 18:57

Thanks for all the replies! Interesting that there’s a real mix of long and short, a lot of people we know seem to do one really long camping trip a year whereas a few shorter ones appeal to us I think.

We do 6 x 3 nights but we are ticking off Wainwrights so it’s exclusively Lakes visits and it’s when boyfriend doesn’t have his kids. We can get all unpacked and pitched in 30 mins.

SnoopyMcLoopy · 27/08/2021 20:02

Pre covid I would do around 5/6 trips per year but Oct/Feb half term would be glamping. One long summer trip to France. Last year and this year has all been uk and managed 3 trips. I don't camp for less than 4 nights 😊

IndiaDreaming · 29/08/2021 21:40

We have (husband, me and two dogs) a full week somewhere I'll put a lot of research into, normally a long drive . We're in the North West and as an example the last few years we've been to North Norfolk, west coast Scotland and Pembrokeshire. That's normally June time. The rest of the year (May-Sep) I'll go often with a friend and her dog, with 1-2 days notice and we'll go to North Wales, Yorkshire and The Lakes mainly. My Husband will come work permitting etc. I think we probably do two local-ish trips per month.

I've actually just been camping by myself, no dogs or husband. Exactly 4.1 miles away from where I live. I've been furloughed for 18 months and I needed some space! It was BLISS.
