Comfortable camp beds

Can anyone recommend any comfortable beds for camping? We went camping last weekend and used an self inflating mat, but I slept so badly as I was so uncomfortable. My previous camping trip I have used an inflatable air bed which was even worse.

DC have really enjoyed the camping trips we have been on but it is putting be off going if I can't get a good nights sleep. We only camped for two nights and I felt like a Zombie after that......I think a week would break me.

If it was because you were cold, a foam yoga mat makes an enormous difference.
Also, don't inflate the bed too much.
For real comfort, have a look at fishing day beds. Expensive tho.

How thick was your SIM?

What specifically was uncomfortable about it?

People really rave about a SIM on top of a Decathlon inflatable camp bed www.decathlon.co.uk/p/inflatable-camping-bed-base-camp-bed-air-70-cm-1-person/_/R-p-309887

I was going to suggest the same. We have these and then a Vango 10 comfort sim on top and it’s really comfy!!

BlackAlys · 15/07/2021 20:50

Same. The Berghaus SIM is luxury!

MrsFin · 15/07/2021 20:52

I agree about not fully inflating the mattress.

Rolypolybabies · 15/07/2021 20:54

Agree with the decathlon one. I slept on one pregnant and even then was fine

Lollypop701 · 15/07/2021 20:58

Do you put a blow up mattress/self inflated on top? Not seen these!

Ravenclawsome · 15/07/2021 21:01

Vango comfort 10 on top of a couple of car windscreen reflectors to reflect the heat

jellybeanteaparty · 15/07/2021 21:04

I have adopted my husband's fishing bed ( with memory foam) - glad someone else mentioned these - they are bulky though

SlipperyLizard · 16/07/2021 09:58

We have Exped Megamat 10s, not cheap and are big even when deflated, but we once slept on them (not all camping) for 9 weeks!

travailtotravel · 16/07/2021 10:05

We have the Outwell camp beds. For a weekend we use Sims and blankets but for our week-long trips, its the big beds. They do take up space but also useful in that you can store stuff underneath etc.
We were away not long ago and I slept better than I slept at home!

Beemail1 · 16/07/2021 11:37

Campbed with SIM on top. If cold a trip to supermarket on arrival for cardboard for insulation underneath. We usually pick up a cardboard box for shoes too then get rid of it all on last day.
Both sleep very well in tent

Yes.
detectivo · 16/07/2021 19:47

The SIM is a vango comfort 10, I wasn't cold. I went to sleep and just woke up with my shoulders, hips and back hurting and I was so stiff in the morning. The second night was worse as I was still aching from the first night, I got about 3 hours sleep and my hip was so painful the next day. After a night in my own bed most of these aches and pains had gone.

I have one similar to this one. Its super sturdy. Firm but not uncomfortable. It would take up a lot of packing space in a car though. I bought mine for super hot nights when I cant sleep indoors - to camp outside until I can face being indoors again!

Bumping this if anyone else has any suggestions. We also have good quality SIMs and my husband still found the experience so uncomfortable this time round. He's a big man so he's on a double to himself.. I don't know what else to suggest to make it better for him. We all enjoyed camping but he hated the sleeping this time so he's reluctant to go again.

BaronessOfTheNorth · 21/07/2021 11:31

Have you tried a Thai mattress?

rbe78 · 21/07/2021 11:40

@detectivo If you don't mind spending (worth it if you're going to camp every year), the Thermarest Dreamtimes are amazing - comfier than some real beds! They can be hard to track down, but it's worth the search.

They are a thick thermarest (self inflating mattress), topped with a layer of memory foam, and all zipped together in a fleece topped cover. You can join two together to make a double bed.

Oh, and don't use sleeping bags - take normal bedding.

rbe78 · 21/07/2021 11:42

Ok, I can't actullay find any for sale - but you could maybe replicate them by getting a memory foam mattress topper and layering on top of a SIM

Oblomov21 · 25/07/2021 11:46

Please does anyone have advice for me. We are going to our caravan next week, Ds1 will be sleeping on our double blow up mattress with his girlfriend. But it's very pitted, uneven, so I wanted to buy a mattress topper. Will I be able to get a 2nd hand one from eBay?

Which one do you recommend please?
