Hi

I think Im going to need to buy a roofbox for my car (if we do manage to get away this year) but I honestly dont have a clue what I need to get and I dont want to be ripped off....

Those of you who have roof boxes, how do you find them? Any recommendations for things to buy or avoid?

What are you going to use it for? I didn't have roof bars on my old car so bought a roof bag instead. Has been a brilliant buy and get all the bedding and other bulky light stuff in there - mats, sleeping bags etc.

There are various makes but I got mine from Road Trip Kit - cames in 4 sizes from 550 litre to 800 litre capacity. Benefit is it folds down small when not in use so easier to store than a roof roof. One downside i can see is that if someone was determined they could remove it/get into it with a knife so wouldn't be any good for travelling with stop offs where the car is unattended.

We’ve got a roof box and I’m not tall enough to help put stuff in there! Even DH who is nearly 6 foot usually stands on a step so we take a portable step with us. Other than that, it is a brilliant way to get extra storage and they are all lockable so secure if you need to stop somewhere

Look second hand.. We got a immaculate condition Halford roof box worth over £300 for 60. Similar for the bars. Used them for 7 years of holidays so far and going strong!

Definitely search second hand - you can get some great deals. We soon learnt to get the Biggest one we can and it’s great. Lockable and opens on both sides - we also take some small steps - or I just hang on the side of the car 😂.

Just make sure you take it off when you’re not using it- your fuel consumption will go right up.

I agree with second hand. We got ours off eBay for £40 and it’s huge. We put all the air beds/tables etc in it.

However yes take steps. I can’t help with ours due to being vertically challenged 😂

Also when you have it on make a note of your total height maybe put a post it somewhere visible. She just scarped a car park barrier before nearly didn’t fit. Very embarrassing but we completely forgot about it.

I got one of these as I'm a short arse.

Have a look at the Roof Box Co website to see what will fit your car. They have some good pages that describe the different types of bars and boxes. Good prices too, if you want new.

Ours is huge and was expensive (something like £500?) But its sleek and holds everything. We take a lot of stuff with us camping, a huge air tent, gas fridge, windbreaks, kitchen stand, grill, BBQ etc etc. We need it!!
