Need a campsite near Bolton Abbey (Skipton, Harrogate ish)

Am planning a final weekends camping in Yorkshire next weekend. Want to go to the sculpture trail at Bolton Abbey near Skipton. Only campsite I found so far is Howgill Lodge and they charge £19.50 per night!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone know of any other good sites in the area which are slightly less expensive. Happy with a no frills site.

Allmytime I think we are following each other around the country. We were at Howgill Lodge last week. It was nice enough, but not worth the amount they charge, and there was a weird pong that we eventually figured out was a kind of cess pool adjacent to the site. Certainly not up to our last experience at Eweleaze! Having said that. I'm not much help on an alternative. There were tents actually pitched on a field right next to the Bolton Abbey carpark (sounds awful but is actually very pleasant), but I don't know how they came to be there and I don't think there were loos or anything. Have a vague recollection that there was a site somewhere near Appletreewick. Sorry - that's no use at all is it!

The one I was thinking of was Mason's Farm. No idea if its any good though.

Gordale Scar campsite is a little basic and can be noisy, but this is more than compensated for by the fantastic location.

the Caravan Club have one at Bolton Abbey but it's hard to get a pitch there

There used to be a campsite at Kettlewell which is just further up the Wharfe. I'm sure there must be loads round there really.

We camped here. Very pleasent small site, good showers etc. Best thing: it was close to a beautiful shallow river, great for paddling. (Beware though there is a waterfall: beautiful but kids obv need supervision there)

The Bolton Abbey one is Strid Wood.

I would avoid Howgill Lodge we stayed there in August as well as charging £19.50 a night they also charge 50p for showers!!!! Can't rteally suggest any alternatives though. Would also point out that we did the sculpture trail at Bolton Abbey and quite a few of the sculptures were missing - some had been vandalised and others had been sold!!!! Didn't want you to be disappointed if thats the reason for your weekend away. Hope you have a good weekend.

Munchie you're the only person other than me who seems less than impressed with Howgill. Had read lots of lovely reports, but was v disappointed with the reality (though we did manage to work out that one of the showers did not need a 50p and just kept running hot!!).

Jan I'd read lots of good reports too and was really looking forward to going. Don't think it's worth the money to stay there though.
