Dutch oven

Does anyone use a Dutch Oven over a wood campfire?

I'm very tempted, but don't want to make a £60+ mistake. Amazon have an own-brand one at £37, but is it worth going for a cheap option? This is going to be a one-off purchase - I don't stay in campfire sites often enough to buy another, better one if I like my trial one.

I do!

There is currently an offer on a Petromax (premium brand) one on Amazon but I can’t work out the capacity.

I have one if the cheap ones and I think it is 4.5l.

I love it!

I have used it for stew, casserole, a whole chicken, some baking.

It takes a while to get the hang of it, you only need a low fire or a few charcoal briquettes under it, and a small amount on top if you are using it as an oven.

I haven’t yet got a tripod, I stand mine in the embers or on the grill over the fire pit.

I think I have this one www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07DNBFTBP/ref=sspa_mw_detail_4?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

I can get a whole small chicken in it.

Dutch oven 😂😂😂😂😂

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 12/06/2019 20:51

I was SO hoping this was a fart in a sleeping bag thread.

cocomelon23 · 12/06/2019 20:52

I thought of farts too 😂😂

LifeIsGoodish · 12/06/2019 22:22

I can't find the Petromax offer. Can you link it?

The Voilamart one is really cheap! Too good to be true, surely?

BTW scoffers, a Dutch oven may reduce farts in sleeping bags, as we'll eat less beans! Grin

Have you used it for camping puddings?

Ohnononono · 15/06/2019 22:34

I have a Dutch oven that my neighbours were throwing out. DH wants me to get rid of it as it’s a bit rusty and he says we’ll never use it! I reckon I can clean it up but have to come up with some good ideas about what to cook in it....

TheRedBarrows · 16/06/2019 06:52

Sorry OP, I think the Petromax one was a sort of flash deal.

OHnononono: you have to keep them seasoned to avoid rust, and not scrub them with detergent. You could clean and re-season on old one very easily.

TheRedBarrows · 16/06/2019 07:09

I made apple and blackberry upside down pudding / cake using foraged fruit. We used a cake mix for convenience, and took a can of cream.

Ohnononono · 18/06/2019 21:32

TheRedBarrows - ooh how did you do that? How long did it take? I have a campfire grill to stand the pot on so guess the trick is getting the right heat.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 18/06/2019 21:35

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of that, Monkeyface and cocomelon 🙈😂😂

TheRedBarrows · 18/06/2019 22:56

Ohnoohno:
I put some butter and brown sugar all over the bottom of the pot, then the fruit, sprinkled with more brown sugar, and then covered it with a mixed up Victoria Sponge cake mix.

I stood the pot in embers, with a couple of chunks of glowing wood / charcoal on top, for about 20 mins I think. Checking occasionally. Then turned it upside down with a tin plate on top. It was a bit burnt in places, but really good!

Clarabeller · 25/08/2019 17:22

We do. Our first one was an expensive Petromax but I hated the design on the lid which made it really hard to season and clean. The lid cracked on its second year so we replaced it this year with the cheap Amazon one which has been fine for our 4 weeks camping this year. We do most of our cooking in the Dutch oven either over a fire or using briquettes.
