Ile De Re (Again).- Tips and Transport

We are thinking of the Ile De Re. We do camp, but probably more inclined to glamping. I don't like places with loud annoying entertainment - European all inclusive resorts filled with bus loads of Brits abroad are my idea of hell.

So
(1) where is good to stay - we have two kids (3 and 5) so self catering with options to BBQ and die from over carb consumption is better than a hotel
(2) We're likely getting the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo. I think we'd like to see Mont St Michel so I am anticipating an overnight stop on the way. Any ideas?

Have a look at Le Phare www.lephare-iledere.com/en and Huttopia Cote Sauvage europe.huttopia.com/en/site/camping-cote-sauvage-ile-de-re/#accueil

Stop at Nantes. It is such a good city for small children. If you want any recommendations for things to do there, just ask.

Les genets campsite with eurocamp is good, there's another one nearby.

We have stayed at this campsite twice www.olela.fr/campings/camping-peupliers and will be going again this year. Good pool, some entertainment but nothing too loud and a lovely 10 minute cycle into La Flotte. Definitely take or hire bikes. La Flotte is our favourite town on the island.

We looked at Ile de Re for August but the weather looks really unpredictable - friends said they went and it rained solidly for 4 days - I'd rather go to Devon!
Has anyone had better experiences?

JustMarriedBecca · 06/05/2019 21:43

Oh. That's not good! Someone said end August is pretty bad but start of the summer holidays is better. It seems pretty pricey - £2k for a challet for the week - I wasn't expecting a camp site to be quite so much!

I really like the Ile de Re. We’ve stayed at La Sunelia (5* campsite with strange swimming pools) and Camping Le Remondeau. Would definitely go back to the latter - basic site but clean with a great location. Bar and restaurant on site, couple of minutes walk to the nearby town

We've been camping in Ile de Re the last two years. Stayed at the Huttopia site nearest the bridge..can't remember the name though. It's good. There are a few Brits but they're nice!
If you're getting overnight boat to St. Malo you won't need a stopover, it's only about 3.5 hours. We also do this. However if you haven't already booked the overnight crossing you might be in trouble...it gets quite busy especially travelling on weekends. We tend to go midweek as we're not organised enough! Also assume you have looked at the cost, it's way more than Calais...but less driving, worth it in my book.
Ile de Re is great. It's warmer than here but not scorching.
