user1471546851 · 13/04/2019 14:43

Is anyone camping over the Easter hols?
Or am I just mad for even considering itHmm
All kitted out with everything we would need in the cold nights but will it still be unbearable?
Havnt been this early before!
Will be going with dc 3 and 5 and my mum as dh has to work.
Does anyone actually go this time of year or will we be on a site on our own Grin

We went in our caravan last week. It was pretty cold at night but there were a few people with tents, about 5 or 6 groups.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 13/04/2019 14:52

You’re nuts! I get cold in August Grin

NotFatTransslender · 13/04/2019 15:51

There was frost on my car yesterday - I live in the midlands. No way!

I have stayed in a caravan at this time of year on the east coast. DS was so cold he cried and we ended up staying one night and then going home.

Also (forgetting the caravan incident!) went camping in a tent one easter. Was woken by the sound of the kids' teeth chattering Grin You could see your breath in front of your face it was so cold. I think we forget that just because the sun comes out in the daytime, it isn't actually that warm yet!

I'm afraid you're quite mad, but if you insist on going, take ALL of the blankets, extra socks, woolly hats, gloves etc. Some people take hot water bottles too. But of course, no heaters, fires/BBQs inside the tent due to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Take care.

We have just camped in Yorkshire with two and five year old, it was fine! Fleece onesies over pj's for kids and thermals for adults and jobs a good un. No electric either.

Take plenty bedding and go to a site with a utility room with kettle, makes such a difference to get hot drinks in everyone quickly.
Wear wellies and overtrousers on kids most of the day as wet equals cold and it's also another wind proof layer.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Think I'm Just going to see how the weather is and play it by ear!
We did go mid May last year and it was lovely!
We have an electric tent heater too and always take loads of blankets /hot water bottles etc.
Think il just see how it goes! Grin

So tempted but being voted down here as it is admittedly still very, very cold at night. Would so love to go - am checking the forecast daily and hoping for a sudden mini heat wave!

user1457017537 · 14/04/2019 08:58

The newer caravans have central heating. Book the new ones with central heating.

Luaa · 14/04/2019 14:21

We are going in Devon in 2 weeks and starting to get a bit worried about how cold it might be overnight. I'll just make sure we take plenty of layers!

annie987 · 15/04/2019 06:56

The weather for Easter weekend looks glorious. 21 and sunny here!

BiddyPop · 16/04/2019 12:10

DD is camping with her Scout troupe - annual tradition. They are expecting sunburn.

I was in a hostel last weekend, and froze! Although I was in a tent on the same site 2 weeks before that (we had enough beds but not in a suitable layout to enable split of kids and adults, and gender splits also - so I ended up in my tent) - and also froze!!

If you go prepared, including thermals and woolly hat to sleep in, blankets for UNDER your sleeping mat to insulate you from the ground, and a backup plan to go home if its very cold, enjoy! The forecast is actually nice.

(DH doesn't "do" camping anymore, and as DD will be away, we are planning on hibernating at home and not moving except for more supplies of naice food....I am hoping for wine in the garden and actually reading my book and getting some sunshine!)....

HopeMumsnet · 16/04/2019 13:01

You've cracked it if you're going this weekend, weather's supposed to be lovely!

HopeMumsnet · 16/04/2019 13:02

(btw yes I am aware that I am killing camping threads all over the shop but reading this board is my happy place and I wanna join in).

onaroll · 16/04/2019 13:46

I am Grin
Going to a small, cheeky festival. So no real ‘facilities’ and no electric.
But there will be lots of music and fire pits to cook on & keep warm throughout the evening.
Just Saturday & Sunday, back on Monday - so grabbing the best of the Weather.
Taking my new ridgemonkey so quite excited by cooking .
It’s cheeky because its just me and Dh. Dd staying at home to revise GCSE’s and Ds doesn’t want to come either.
Excited not worried - I have tent camped many a Feb term in snow so this should be a breeze .Wink

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 16/04/2019 14:39

Took the cubs at the weekend, was fudging cold with ice on the tents but with the right gear everyone stayed warm. Plus it's a good excuse to hang out by the fire.

badger21 · 16/04/2019 17:21

Cheeky last-minute trip to Fontainebleau for some chilling/bouldering in the forest with the family. Good campsite to head to - just hope I’ve packed enough layers and the weather forecast is accurate!

jobbymcginty · 16/04/2019 17:26

We're just back went to Oxfordshire and Morecambe . We're Scottish though so maybe hardcore and used to the cold Grin

chillpizza · 17/04/2019 16:21

We are going tomorrow until monday. it has said rain for monday but looks like its staying dry (dont want to take down the tent in the rain!). DH hate camping so I'm hoping that this will convince him to let me have a caravan.

Catquest1 · 18/04/2019 18:28

We are taking our campervan out for the first time this year :)

We tend to carry plenty of blankets and hot water bottles as standard at this time of year but plenty of thick jumpers and socks added for the evenings !

FusionChefGeoff · 18/04/2019 18:53

We're off tomorrow! The forecast is glorious.

averythinline · 19/04/2019 00:57

yes off tomorrow /today only 2nd time camped at easter ...and those ridgemaster things look good more stuff to buy!

BiddyPop · 19/04/2019 14:52

Just back from dropping dd off at scout camp Nd actually quite jealous as glorious weather and they have a fab site!

Dh and I will just have to enjoy the peace of the back garden instead (I may break out wine before 5!)

CustardOmlet · 20/04/2019 06:05

Anyone else freezing their nipple off this morning? This is not 9c!
