Kitchen Storage Ideas

Hoping for some inspiration from you all! We previously had a big plastic storage box that we just threw everything in, but after cutting my hand last year whilst delving for a knife I'm after something -more organised- a bit safer . It's to keep utensils, cling film, pans, plates etc in.

We have this decathlon camping cupboard which is brilliant but takes up a lot of space. I have a separate table for the actual camping stove. www.decathlon.co.uk/kitchen-unit-for-camping-id_8358365.html

We use something like this without the inner cupcakes part for cutlery, knives, foil etc. I have found other smaller plastic boxes to keep cutlery together in the box. It travels clipped together, then we just separate the boxes and leave on a shelf of the cooking table to act like a cutlery drawer.

Plates/bowls, chopping boards go in a plastic box (about 10-15l?). They travel contained in the box, but we upend the plates etc on site so it acts like a cupboard. Both ideas save a lot of faff, I cannot be bothered building storage units etc, so I like that they travel and store.

We have a large ikea Samla box with tray insert on top... looking online I can’t see it in the same size but they have a smaller version.

I have everything in a box that travels with the exact same box nested underneath. That empty box becomes the food storage once we’ve done a shop. I have one of those for cutlery and one for small bits like matches, can’t remember what else! www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?lan=uk&ShopSel=y&scrn=375&wndw=375&sec=17&sub=80&pid=7469&gclid=eaiaiqobchminmhxh5xv4aivged3ch2njwlteaqybcabeglzlfdbwe

Buy one or two knives that come with covers. Kuhn Rikon Colori+ Set of 2 Non-Stick Preparation Knife Set, Green and Orange www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00T34U9HS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zLVCCbCNSSTWT?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I also have an Ikea Samla box with storage tray that lifts out.

I also have 3 very sharp knives that I bought specifically for camping - because they each have a cover on the blade. So they NEVER go back in the box until the cover goes back on each one. (A small peeling-type knife, a smallish chopper (compared to the size I use at home), and a mid-sized serrated knife). I think the set of 3 was about €12 from TKMaxx.

All the other cutlery bits (lots of ikea non-stick stuff (slotted spoon, ladle, whisk, spatula), a tongs, a peeler, corkscrew, etc) also go into the tray part.

Underneath, I have things like a pair of silicon oven mitts, washup brush, 100ml travel bottle of fairy liquid, couple of boxes of matches....and various other "vital" pieces of camping kitchen kit. Grin

Thanks all. We went with the ikea samla box. They don’t do an insert for the big one any more so went for 2 smaller ones with inserts. Dilemma solved!!

Lots of people put knives in a pencil case!

One of these - no packing / unpacking needed and then a counter for the kettle and tea , coffee canisters on top on site.
