Most awnings are 2.5 metres wide x the length of your caravan.
3.5 & 4.5 metre wide awnings are available but may limit where you can camp in regards to available pitching space.

We have a Bradcot full length x 2.5 metre wide which you could hold a party in!
Depending on the ages of the occupants, you can get awning extensions which zip in where the end windows go and can make two more additional 'bedrooms'.

Rolls Royce of awnings is an Isobella. We have an Isobella Porch awning which just covers from the front of our door to just past the rear wheel, around 50% of the 'van and that weighed in just short of £1000!

Type & size will depend on where you are camping (UK or sunnier climes) and ages of occupants.

We have a kampa rally pro. It is a 3/4 awning. Fairly lightweight, very easy to put up. DH does it on his own while I do the water etc. Obviously is isn't as big as a full size awning but big enough for the six if us to eat in etc. (Our oldest DSes sleep in a pup tent, our DDS are too young yet and still sleep in the caravan but you can get a zip in end section for sleeping if you want).
We were offered a full Isabella awning by a friend and planned to try it for a weekend. Just putting it in the car was enough to put us off. There is a reason why they are affectionately known as 'a divorce in a bag!"

Half the fun of caravanning is getting your rig set up and then watching the fall-outs as awnings go up round you :-)
