CAMPERVANS anyone?

We are considering getting a campervan for 2 adults and 2 kids (2 and 5 years old) for touring Europe for 5 weeks this summer, are we insane?

Should we do this?

Any horror stories/success stories?

we have 1984 talbot express ( I now know this by heart, because dh just spent whole weekend on campsite on phone to AA/mechanics/autopart stores seeking various parts for it in order to get home again ).

ooh, my dds are just that age. i'd LOVE a camper. are they expensive? i dont think you're mad, but would avoid really long journies and i think moving site alot could be hard work. i'd probably limit my itinerary so pace was relaxed.

will watch this with interest as we have a 19704 VW campervan. It has the original tent and awning but we have not as yet stayed overnight in it. It has been fine for longish jouneys - went from London to Brittany in it last year. This year we went to Devon in it, but the clutch went on the way back.

I must say that all the 70s fixtures and fittings seem alien, fragile and fiddly, though dh assures me they are not. But the problem is that if you break anything, finding replacements can be difficult. Same goes for spares. And awful accindents can happen, like not attaching the lift off roof properly before you drive it, which can cause the roof to blow off!

We are going to test run all the camping stuff a nearby green space, just to see how it all fits together. We are meant to be camping proper in it in Cornwall in August.

Anyone have an early bay and two children to transport? How are you fitting the car seats in with a rock and roll bed?

quadrophenia · 20/06/2007 22:12

Hi we have an early bay and four kids, don't have a rock and roll bed though as its an old interior. Our friends with a rock and roll bed have inertia belts fitted in their early bay with a rock and roll bed, its quite common and can be done. If you go on vzi there are loads of threads regarding this and where you can get it done.

that's brilliant - thanks

I miss my camper van - was beautiful VW1972, did it up from being a non-starter and went everywhere in it for 3 years, you'll love it!
Had to sell when we separated and I could no longer afford to run it. I had seatbelts fitted to 2 back seats which worked well with car seats. If buying an old one ensure engine and floor pan/ underside is sound or at least if not, that you are aware of costs before buying as it can get pricey.

Go for it I'm so
