Campsites for groups of families to pitch together

Had a quick trawl through the threads to see if this has been answered before but can't see anything...

We're just back from a long weekend camping with friends and their kids (5 families in total) and had a great time, only slightly marred by the fact that the campsite had very rigid rules around where you could/couldn't pitch.

Next time I'd love to find somewhere where we could have our own little corner of a field so that we weren't disturbing anyone should the kids be up and about at 7am or if we are still chatting post 10pm.

Does such a site exist or is this just very wishful thinking? Any recommendations gratefully received!

We have just been to Ouse Meadow in Sussex. Very limited facilities but a brilliant space.

Whereabouts are you looking? We just took DD (17m) camping for the first time and needed a big, quiet field where we could ensure we wouldn't disturb anyone if she cried all night. (She actually slept 6pm to 7am!) Ended up at www.nhfcamping.com/ near Chichester and it was stunning. A huge open field which sounds perfect for you. The website fails to mention the total lack of facilities though, no showers or tap as far as we could tell, just a few portaloos! It was fine for one night though.

Wowo campsite near uckfield has group pitches.

CMOTDibbler · 05/06/2018 13:54

At Fforest fields, you can ask to pitch on the sports field and then pretty much you choose where you want to be.
Note though, that if you are the type to be fairly loud chatters past 10, they are very strict on late night noise and the cut off is 10.30

What area of the country?

The Camping Unplugged sites, Nethergong Nurseries, Glottenham Camping, Thistledown, BlackBerry Woods... search on a ‘campfires allowed’ filter as these are often the ‘pitch where you like ‘ sites.

They tend to be more ‘back to basics ‘ sites, frequently with compost or ‘event’ toilets and some, not all, are very expensive compared with holiday park type sites.

Thanks! We're south Midlands so can get to most places reasonably quickly (maybe not Devon/Cornwall/Scotland).

Off to check out all the sites now...

Have a look at the Cool Camping website, search by campfire, they have loads all over tne country.

PitchUp also has good filters.

we are doing a pop up private single group only personal campsite at Glottenham this august - just gone live on Cool Camping (I think Im allowed to plug it as someone has already mentioned it upthread) One family will have to hire the single yurt (or split the cost between you and use it as a base) and then there are up to 5 tent pitches

Titsywoo · 06/06/2018 22:32

We always go as a group. We love Wellington Country Park which is near Reading. If you look at their campsite map they have lots of small areas sectioned off. There is loads of space and the access to the country park is brilliant. We're going for the 5th time this year.

I stayed at Bircheood Farm near Matlock in Derbyshire with a group of friends - I think there were 9 tents in total. The section as you enter the site is quite regimented with specific pitches but you can go through to an open field where you can all camp where you like. It was great, there was only one other group at the opposite corner of the huge field.

Shell Island in Wales. www.shellisland.co.uk/about-us.html.
You can camp where you like on the site no pitches marked out.

BetterEatCheese · 06/06/2018 23:18

There's a lovely one in the Cotswolds and if you can get pitches near the central play area it's very relaxing!

We have been and pitched up 5 families together. They also have a little farm, table tennis, facilities are lovely

CommanderShepard · 09/06/2018 21:38

Valley Farm just outside Oxford is a pitch-where-you-like sort of affair. We were there recently alongside two large groups. www.valleyfarmcampsite.com/

SocksRock · 09/06/2018 21:43

Far Peak at Northleach is lovely and you can do this - there is a climbing centre and bike hire there as well so loads to do.

xyzandabc · 09/06/2018 21:45

Anita's at Mollington we've done big group camping several times and it's a lovely clean site too. Also far peak at northleach as mentioned above.

MrsPworkingmummy · 09/06/2018 21:45

I would rent Gill Head Farm in the Lake District. Ask to pitch on their secret field by the stream... Just fab xx

chickenchip · 11/06/2018 09:05

I'd second shell island- it's great for groups

MinsPei · 11/06/2018 09:12

Thirding Shell Island! They have lots of large camping fields but you can also drive further along than those and find a spot near the sand dunes. Lots of little camping 'coves' under trees that are perfect for groups.
