We are travelling down to Italy during the summer to a friends wedding. Have decided to camp before where we arrive in Italy.

Problem 1 - Taking 3 kids (12, 5 & 4)!!!

Problem 2 - Never camped before!! Tents recommendations most appreciated please!!!

Problem 3 - What the hell do I need to buy. I want to be comfortable!!!

Please help me.

Tunnel tents are easy to put up and can be very spacious if you get one with a good number of sleeping compartments. Ours is a Robens double dreamer with two bedrooms. They do a triple too with more living space and an extra bedroom. I swear by it.
Self inflating matresses do away with the need for a pump and are surprisingly comfortable.
For Italy in the summer I'd say a cool box was a good plan and a simple stove to make hot drinks.

You should be fine with 3 helpers like that, work out jobs for them all to do when pitching/unpitching and have a practice run in your garden.
I don't like dome tents personally as the central room can get very hot and stuffy with all the pods and only one exit.
This is a good one. Sewn-in Groundsheet is the only thing I wish my tent had.
We have an old double sleeping bag which we pop our self-inflating mat in and sleep on top under an opened-up single one.

we have an inflatable mattress with (vital) a pump that plugs into the cigarette lighter on the car.

More wine than you think you'll need

I can recommend the tent linked to before, as I have the 8 person version. I know rather a lot (sdly ) about tents and this si what we chose after a lot of research (we have a canopy / footprint groundsheet and carpet for it also)

Comfort in hot weather? well first whatever tent yu get make it light coloured, dark tents heat up so badly in hot eather! If you can afford canvas how about the Khyam Indiana? Same as the last one but in a polycotton- worth a look.

Sleeping bags- cotton liners. We have a Lichfield from Argos that is cotton / flannel for just this reason.

Ice blocks- lots as most campsites do an exchange scheme. Warm wine in Italy??

for a first trip maybe a camping gaz party grill? packs down really small, built in griddle plate and burner- we have the larger version now, started with the smaller. both are excellent.

Cotton nightwear- kids want to throw off their clothes when its hot at night, but they can't nip to the loo naked, so cotton is a must!

cheapo flip flops they can wear in the showers, round the site, in streams and that you can bin instead of transporting home

try and find a crockery set that includes a chopping board / cheese knife if you want to make use of the local fare. And if you don't, ewhy not? (our Millets picnic rucksack does include this)

Drinks bottles- kids tend to forget to drink when there's no tap in front of them, well mine do- I make them carry bottles around.

My boys sleep on cheap camp beds and love them, £9.99 each in Millets. We have an airbed. If only they amde double camp beds LOL!

Hot water bottle. It gets cold at night. Stick this in your sleeping bag 10 mins before you get in....mmmm toastie

MoreSpamThanGlam · 07/05/2007 18:48

A tent you can stand up in (at least 130cms high)...otherwise killer backache.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 07/05/2007 18:56

A seperate pod tent for all your gear...still thinking...chairs....a portable sturdy table...hook up lamp...electric hook up cable...bin liners....duck tape....hammer....bucket for night time emergencies....tupperware....salt and pepper....flytape...antibac wipes....water carrier...washing up bowl...still thinking...

PeachyChocolateEClair · 07/05/2007 18:58

Duck tape??? thats a new one on me! We have a separate footprint and SIG so no issues there, for the tent if it rips?

Blandmum · 07/05/2007 19:12

Duck tape is like the force. It has a dark side and a light side and it holds the universe together

PeachyChocolateEClair · 07/05/2007 20:25

It certainly holds a few carnival floats together that I know of (not to mention DH's sleeping bag when we met, it was 90% duck tape)

Never thought of taking it camping though! I won't mention to DH, the site'd be covered in the stuff!

purpleduck · 07/05/2007 21:24

um...we have bought a countertop fridge (but that is for when we are camping here). Its about the same size as a cool box, and I don't have to worry about things going off, and i hate it when everything gets all wet Grr!!

purpleduck · 07/05/2007 21:25

I mean I hate it when things go all wet in the cool box, you know when the ice blocks sweat, and the cheese slices get wet and go all gooey! Yech!!
