Have researched the Vendee (bit far and long, windy beaches), the Loire (ditto but quite promising, maybe next year) and have come to the conclusion the solution is Brittany in June, via Speed Ferries or unholy-hour Chunnel (price is a bit of an issue) and a bit of a drive. Anyone got any ideas? We like coves and rock pools rather than miles of golden sand and we'd be going to Devon if a) we weren't going to be just a bit more adventurous this year and b) we thought the weather might be better here! Yes, I KNOW it rains in Brittany as well but a distinctly average week in Aug in Dorset last year put us off a bit! Any thoughts, good or bad, welcomed!

have you got your own tent??

Personaloly when researching sites I do the following

  1. get all brochures (keycamp/eurocamp/canvas - or look online)

  2. decide the few sites I like the look of - pools, size of pitches, number of piches, facilities

  3. look at the campsites personal website

  4. check out Alan Rogers reviews.

  5. Book

I check out the eurocamp site because my kids like to make friends on holiday, but can be a little shy, therefore they find it easier to find english kids to play with. This is one of their criteria. Also I find those companies have the most money to find the best sites, and also the sites usually have the best pools/facilities. As we have our own tent/equipment it is always dirt cheap in high season. But going in June it could be cheaper (or similar) to go with Eurocamp. We have been on teh Whitsun 1/2 term for about £300 for the week in one of their tents (which saves time/hassle on arrival and means free kids clubs)

You could try Raguenes Plage near Concarneau. It is walking distance from a beach, and there are lovely rock pools on the next cove along (walking along the beach). They do Eurocamp as well, so don't have to take the ark.

Thanks. We do have our own gear but won't necessarily be taking it- it's a question of the economics, really! If it were to cost 100 quid a week more in their pre-set up tents, we'd do it, for instance! And of course, a fully laden car uses a lot more fuel.

When are you going? Is it in the whitsun week or out of school holidays?

Look here for may half term hols, le Garengoire is vendee but fantastic site.

If you look at other dates in June you could look here there seem plenty under £300 for 4 people in a tent

We went here and it was fab. Lovely clean site, great pool and walking distance to the beach. There were some brilliant rock pools in the area. We thought it was very like Cornwall which we love. This year we went to the Vendee, but much preferred Brittany.

We went with Matthews holidays who were cheapest. They've got a forum on their website with info about the sites.

Cloudhopper - any tips about Raguenes? We're going to les deux fontaines - check it out Miljee, looks fab! Anyway just wondered if you had any top tips having been there!!!
Miljee, one of the best sites we stayed in in Brittany is Camping Mane Guernehue in Baden, not on the cost but 10 mins drive to a load of good beaches. It was a wonderful site with the best pool complex we've had on a French camping holiday.

We've also been to Le Gulivenic - Camping Village la plage whic, for location, was fab. We went at the end of season and they actually closed down with us still there!!! Had a few probs but that was put down to it beinfg end of season. It's directly on a beach and is a nice place. Also been to the Vendee and had some fantastic hols there too!!
