First time France! But where to camp?

Hello all! I've only just discovered this little corner of Mumsnet and can't believe the level of camping knowledge, so I wondered if anyone could help with some France recommendations.

We bought a second hand trailer tent (ace, by the way!) this year, and had our inaugural family trip to Pembrokeshire in August. Tent was great, Pembrokeshire is lovely, but my word, did it rain! So, I'm already planning next year's jaunt, hoping for some better weather on the continent.

We've never done it before and don't really know France. I'm doing plenty of research, but it's all a bit overwhelming. Could anyone help narrow it down a bit?

The plan at the moment is to take a night ferry to St Malo to cut down on some driving, and then drive about 4-5 hours from the port, maybe towards Vendee or Aquataine but totally flexible on this. The kids will be 5 and 10, and we'd like somewhere near water for swimming, preferably the sea but a lake would be fine, towns and villages to explore nearby, and site with a pool and activities, but one that is not too lively and quietens down of an evening for a good night's rest - this last bit is most important!

Sorry for the list of demands, but like I say, it's really hard to know where to start! Really grateful for any suggestions!

Bretignolles sur mer would fit your needs. Small town with a couple of nice restaurants. A few beaches and loads of campsites. Also a swimming lake for children. Can't remember the name of campsite we stayed on but there were several. Most French campsites are quiet after about 10.30 unless there's a local fete/celebration. We hit Bastille Day every year and have got used to fireworks

That looks very promising, thank you! Seems like there are lots of sites to choose from in the area. Pleased to hear most sites are quiet! Thanks again!
