How to store a tent - flat or upright?

Sorry for the stupid question!
I have only ever seen tents stored lying flat in shops but it fits much better in the space we have at home if it is standing up.
I'm worried I might be doing something really stupid though (camping novices!) and damage it somehow.
Can you please tell me how best to store it?!

I can't see how it would get damaged. Mine is stored upright in a cupboard.

Flat is preferable however if it needs to be upright remove the poles and keep them flat...stops the ends being damaged.
