Duvets in a tent?

SandunesAndRainclouds · 10/05/2017 18:52

My DCs hate sleeping bags - they always get tied up in knots and find it hard to get comfortable.

This year I might try single duvets for them. Maybe vacuum pack them so they're tiny to pack (would be a problem the other end of the holiday though without taking my hoover....!)

Is this a crazy idea? What tog would I need if I did go for it? We are going to be in France, Loire region. We were there last year and DCs did find the nights chilly so had sleeping bags with their fleece blankets on top.

I always take the duvets camping. Sleeping bags suck - so restrictive. I just take the ones off our beds.

PocketNiffler · 10/05/2017 18:59

Either duvets (but remember they will need something under them for warmth too or one of these from go outdoors - I have one myself as normal sleeping bags make me claustrophobic! m.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-dino-dreams-sleeping-pod-p397840&gclid=CI6QwM7z5dMCFWe77Qodno8OQA&gclsrc=aw.ds

They've got double height air beds with a sheet on - will I need something else under the sheet for extra warmth?

Air beds offer no insulation from the ground. Air conducts the cold of the ground upwards, and body heat down into the ground.

A sleeping bag provides a layer of insulation underneath. You could put a fleece blanket under the sheet, or even cardboard under the air bed.

Letmesleepalready · 10/05/2017 20:26

Duvets are the best. We have a camping mat (like the yoga ones) under the air bed, and a fleece blanket over the air bed, plus the duvets. Super comfy and warm (until the air bed starts to lose some air!)

MrsLettuce · 10/05/2017 20:30

I always take our duvets from home, hate sleeping bags. You need some form of insulation under an air bed and a blanket between the air bed and the sheet to be properly warm IME.

SmokeCloak · 10/05/2017 20:31

We always took duvets. Cant be doing with sleeping bags.

PugwallsSummer · 10/05/2017 20:44

Always take duvets, with a blanket on top of the air bed to lay on.

Oakmaiden · 10/05/2017 20:45

Another sleeping bag hater. We take duvets, and I lie them across the back seat of the car and the children sit on them while we travel.

Firenight · 10/05/2017 20:49

We have camping mats, fleece brushed cotton sheet and a duvet. Blankets too when it's really cold. The duvet rolls up tight in a stuff sack.

pictish · 10/05/2017 20:57

Oakmaiden that's how we transport them too.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 10/05/2017 21:01

Some great ideas thank you. I think we've got some camping mats and they are easy to squeeze in.... we are a family of 6 so space can be an issue at times!

I put the duvets flat on the floor of the car boot, then put all the other stuff on top which squashes them very flat so they take up very little space.

pictish · 10/05/2017 21:06

We do that with the rugs.

MazDazzle · 10/05/2017 21:10

We cover the whole floor of the tent in roll up picnic blankets/mats, then have a sheet on top of the blow up bed, a sheet over us and a duvet. The duvet is easy to kick off when it starts to get warm at around 5am.

EsmesBees · 10/05/2017 21:14

We always take duvets camping too, plus a mattress topper for over the air bed. Take the warmest you have. It gets cold in a tent even in summer. But you will get boiling when the sun comes up.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 10/05/2017 21:24

I can cope with being boiling... I'm always blue with cold!

I've definitely got spare PVC backed picnic blankets, will they do? The main part of the tent (Outwell Montana 12) has a 'proper' carpet.

We are hoping to UK camp in half term so it'll be a good practice run ⛺️

Does your air bed pump 'suck' as well as 'blow'??!!! 😉 if so you can vac pack at end of holiday too!!

MazDazzle · 10/05/2017 22:18

A mattress topper! What a fab idea. Haven't thought of that one. We're hoping to camp this summer, though our tent hadn't been up the last two summers.
