Great place for kids - Balamory land (potential tenters should be interested in this)

DH & I stayed here on Mull last year when I was 5 months pregnant but it would be perfect for families. It's at Craignure, near the ferry terminal (from Oban) and if your kids are pressurising you into going to Balamory (Tobermory) then this could be the cheap accommodation option.

Basic but great fun and able to move around freely with the luxury of a calor gas heater. It was Easter when we went and luckily the weather was fab - 70F during day, however at night temp dropped a lot as it was still early in season, hence gas heater was a godsend. Apart from Balamory, there are castles, bird of prey centre, miniture railway, gorgeous scenery and the freedom to let kids play.

For those thinking of buying a tent but wondering how it would go, then this would be a good test as it is a sort of half way house.

does balamory really exist? can you go there for a real holiday? OMG!!

(am going to be devastated if i've misunderstood and it doesnt exist)

tamum · 25/05/2004 23:05

Thanks for that Soozi, it looks really good.

Maisystar, it's a real place, called Tobermory, but just be aware that Archie's castle isn't really there, it's in North Berwick (on the mainland). The harbour's real though

Have a look here for more information, maisystar!

Driven through before kids and Balamory and it is a real sweet wee place, have to say I hope commecialism doesn't kill it.

I doon't know whether it's true but they are not filmong Josie Jump houe at the same place coz the guy who owns it came out and told a small child that he was her dad and he had killed her!!!!

Hope it's an urban myth.

But don;t let that put you off, the highalnders are the best group of people you will ever meet, so friendly and will draw you into a conversation in a pub. GO GO GO. Drive up the west coast and experience the best scenery that money can buy

I've been there loads of times. Even prior to Balamory fame, it's always been lovely. There are loads of similar highland fishing towns with all the houses painted different colours (Tarbert, Portree) but Tobermory is the most picturesque.

kalex! is this true!!!??? hee hee! what a horrible thing to say!... yet makes me sniggery!!!!

Twinkie · 26/05/2004 10:32

No apparently the man who owns the house did tell people that he had killed Josie Jump - ha ha ha - bit like me telling people Barney is dead (or is that just wishful thinking!!)

NomDePlume · 26/05/2004 10:38

ROFL... (sorry, can't help myself) ! I have to say that I think it would drive me round the bend if I had hoardes of rug-rats hanging around outside my house demanding to see a fictitious character, I might be tempted to say something similar....

I wish Barney would be snuffed out too (ideally in some sort of east-end gangster sort of a way - ie horrible). Not that my DD is remotely aware of the his purpleness, but frankly just knowing he's out there with those nauseating singing kids is shudderingly nightmarish.
