How do I make my tent dark enough for dc's age 4,7,8 to sleep in past 5.30????

You can't!

Trick is to make them SOOOO tired they'll sleep anyway.

DS is 4 and often wears an eye mask (£1 from primary) to bed (at home!).

Tarpaulin over the sleeping compartment.

We bought some weed proof membrane from wickes and hung it over the sleeping compartment. It's breathable so you don't get loads of condensation. We did one layer and, whilst it didn't black it out, it definitely took the edge off so wasn't really bright at 6am. Kids slept til 7 and mine are particularly rubbish sleepers! Might do another layer on our next trip and see if that helps.
