Planning / licence been refused - but it may open later in the year.

Yes, sad isn't it? I had planned to go at Easter and dropped them a line, only to receive the news about the licence. Have you heard anything more Blu?

Blu · 19/05/2015 20:26

I knew you would be first to the thread Grin Sad

No I was just looking at their website today as I was pondering one of their other sites and couldn't remember its name so went though Forgewood. And it said they were refunding booked places etc, but hoping to be able to open if they can solve whatever licensing / planning issues they are having.

I wonder why they got turned down? I know there was an issue with smoke over neighbouring farms / homes sometimes.

It will cause a lot of displacement booking on comparable sites S of London, I reckon.

Grin

It's our favourite site and I was there on my own with the kids last year and they even jump started my car for me after the battery died. I really hope they get the licence back.

We went to Wowo instead at Easter and had a lovely time since it was nice and quiet. Not sure I fancy it in high season though.

Blu · 19/05/2015 21:39

I have never been to Wowo. Sounds good for a quiet time, but like you I would avoid it when packed, I think.

I have a teen boy and his friends, and they like the scope of sites with big woods.

Move up north! Some of us are allowed real fires in our house Wink.

Don't know the site but sounds a real shame, hope they sort a licence.

hillbilly · 20/05/2015 10:17

Hey prof I'm coming oop north next week (I am a long lost northerner actually!) and hoping for good weather in the lakes unlikely Hmm

Blu · 20/05/2015 14:45

I'll be in the Lakes at half term - not camping though - a cottage.

It's funny - the widest range of 'Have a campfire and pitch more or less where you like in woods / field areas with loads of space' campsites seems to be in Sussex and surrounds. But it is a growing trend.

Maybe the freer attitude to campfires and pitching in the south east of the country reflects the fact that we are far less free to have fires in our homes and are also crammed in to much smaller houses and gardens in our every day lives (by and large).

Perhaps these things are less of a priority elsewhere in the country because there is more space and access to the countryside there .

hz · 20/05/2015 17:02

It definitely is a growing trend, lots more are going for the fire pit option now. Seems like a no brainer to me, sites can charge to rent the brazier and for the wood. Why would you not! Shame about Forgewood, they have quite a fleet of other sites now though. Really recommend Inwood if you haven't tried it yet it's HUGE, just like camping in your favourite woodland. Went there in bluebell season last year. So lovely.

Was chatting with John this weekend at their new site - Lordswoods, forgewood as we know it is over Sad

Lordswood is very much like forgewood in the early days but be warned its hilly! We managed to find a flattish spot and everyone there seemed to find it no problem. It is basic, only portaloos and portashowers so far but he has plans!

hillbilly · 26/05/2015 00:02

Oh Spadewood that is so sad. It's our favourite site. However part of what made it so good was John, Kate and the team. So if I knew they were present at their other sites I would definitely go. We went to abbots tone a couple of years ago and loved it too. I wish them all the best.

Spadequeen · 26/05/2015 07:06

John was there the whole weekend and Kate popped by to say hi so very much the same feel. Also fires allowed all day as no grumpy neighbours!
