Camping toilets....

Thinking ahead for summer camping and remembering the one thing I really dislike about camping- trekking to the loo in the middle of the night. I'm thinking of getting a bucket type loo just for night time use and saw a hi gear one for £20 which seems fine but just wondered if anyone puts anything in the bottom? Smells and spills are my main concern. I've seen various suggestions including expensive bags with granules, nappy in the bottom, cat litter, just disinfectant..... Just wondered if anyone had a foolproof method and how they go about disposal (generally go to small sites with no chemical toilet disposal facilities)
Thanks

We bought a Kampi Khazi and it changed my camping life. In fact I hardly ever have to go during the night now because I don't think about it any more.

It's a very stable shape because much wider at the bottom so unlikely to tip over, but not exactly unobtrusive in the tent either.

We just throw a cover over it during the day and nobody visits us anyway when we're camping so its looks aren't really a problem.

Oh forgot, don't put anything in the bottom. Never had a problem with smells if you empty it every morning and clean with a wipe.

Gah! Missed your last question. Just empty it down the campsite loos, there are no chemicals added so just like emptying a big potty.

If you go to the sites that appeal to families with small children you definitely won't be the only one traipsing across the field carrying one of these each morning...

Oo, thanks, that's cheaper than the hi gear one, looks better and it has a loo roll holder. Thanks also for pointing out the seemingly obvious that wee can go down toilets. I'd missed that!

We have the kampa one too. I'm glad we got it now as ds's need to go at least twice a night each!
It's nice knowing it's there if we need it

I sometimes add a couple of drops of zoflora, but to be honest if it's only used for night wees and emptied the next morning you don't need anything.

Anothe vote for the Kampa from us too. I usually put some chemicals in it as DS (5) always does a number 2 just before bed so don't want to let that fester for the night!

I've emptied it in portaloos as festivals or loos at sites with no CDP.

We take a bath mat to stand it on to save the tent floor from aiming issues too. Take a black bag to take it home in too, you can give the inner bucket a fairly good rinse (take a bottle of water when you empty it) but I only hose it down and antibac it when we get home.

We put cat litter in ours but only use it every so often. We have the go outdoors bucket too. Rinse with zoflora
