Campsite Recommendations for Northern Spain

Evening fellow campers. Smile

I'm having a bit of a 'choice overload' moment and need some advice.

With one thing and another (mostly my mum dying at the end of November) we haven't really thought about this summer's holiday. We've never been the types to book ages in advance so our holidays are usually a bit last minute anyway.

I quite fancy Northern Spain, possibly Asturias in the Picos de Europa area. We prefer smaller sites and quite like this one Has anyone been? We've lookedat the ferry to Santander and, of course, most crossings are already full so I feel we should book sooner rather than later. I've been told it can be very wet in Northern Spain - how bad is it?

The other option is ferry to Bilbao and drive back up through France, although DH less keen on lots of driving. this site looks great Again, has anyone visited?

Sorry, that was a bit epic. Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi there,

I have just written a really long message in the 'cheap campsites' thread about 2 campsites in northern Spain - one in Llieda and the other in Cadaques.

Have a wee look there

xx

It can be very wet, I had a very very wet September there a few years ago. Last year was fab weather though.
I like Comillas, nothing to do but swim and hang out on the beach. Sightseeing of course, plenty of that. Don't know if you go for kids entertainment things? I don't have kids and like things small and simple.
The Comillas campsite is on a low cliff along the beach, very nice.
In the Picos the campsite in Avin is good for a base if you want to go walking. More toursity central is Arenas.
Deeper in the mountians there's a great nature site in Posada de Valdeon, that just in Leon.
Beautiful area, hope this helps!

We have been to the one in France. Lovely campsite, nice feel to the place with nice individual touches like the hand built playground.

Kids made some good friends and loved freedom of running around the site. No swimming pool but kids did run around in the sprinklers when they were on.

Only slight downside was that it isn't really walking distance of anywhere and they don't have croissants in the morning!

Also sea is very rough for small kids but there are some nice lakes or too far away.

I love Northern Spain Smile . These two are in my top five favourite campsites in Europe.

These are not whizzy campsites. No swimming pools, entertainment. They don't have many British tourists. But they have other visitors from other places in Europe. When we were kids, language barriers never seemed to stop us having great fun with other children - games of volleyball, building mega sandcastles on the beach etc. don't require much verbal communication.

If either of them take your fancy, let me know and I can recommend restaurants etc.

But shh! Don't tell everyone. These have to be our little secret! If I go back in five years time and find these sites full of brits, I'll be most disappointed. Grin
