Is anyone camping in the UK at the moment? Is it cold at night?

I'm considering going camping for 2 nights next week. Children are 11 and 9. I'm cold at home in the evenings at the moment so can't quite imagine sitting outside a tent in an evening, or being warm enough to sleep. Am I becoming a wimp in my old age? I really want to get away for a few days but I don't want to be cold! Stupid English school summer holidays which don't actually take place during decent summer weather.

Just back from IOW & we were all warm and cosy at night. All slept on SIMS, kids with sleeping bags and fleece blankets (they slept on top of these in the end as were too hot in bed) and DH and I with simulated sheepskin fleece underblanket and thick quilt on top. We were far too warm though and kept kicking the quilt off (think the underblanket makes a huge difference). Had a small electric fan heater with us which we used for an hour or so in the evening and that warmed the tent up nicely before bed.

Thankfully I read this thread before setting off, so we took a fan heater, hot water bottles as well as extra blankets to put on top of the air beds to act as an additional layer underneath the sleeping bags. With all that, we were nice and cosy at night and I had the heater on for a couple of hours before we went to bed as well as first thing in the morning.

I would love to have a heater. Smile

So what about October? Is it definitely too cold for camping over half term?

lavendersun · 04/09/2014 20:19

We are meant to be off to the Lakes at half term- no EHU. Mind you we were in Norfolk at the weekend and I was cold at night, not in bed but before bed, sitting outside was not an option.

I might wimp out to be honest if it is really cold - never would have done before so not sure what has changed.

I'm glad others are still talking about another camping trip. I'm hoping to go for the last weekend in September so long as it's not pissing down!

We were in Cornwall and it was very stormy (gusts of 35mph) and cold at night, sitting outside was not possible most of the time, it was too cold and too windy, but it was ok in the tent with the heater on. The ground is cold though and this may be the problem for half term, even with ground sheet and carpet.

We didn't go in the end. Not just because of the weather but because of our kitchen extension reaching a crucial stage. I feel I missed out. It's the first year of no camping since 2004.

I'm considering half term. We have EHU and carpet etc. we did take a fan heater last weekend which helped and we weren't cold in the night but it doesn't change the fact that one still has to walk to the loos etc!

What is EHU, please? Electric (H) Underfloor Heating or something like that Envy.

Karenthetoadslayer · 05/09/2014 14:13

?

NettleTea · 05/09/2014 23:34

Electric Hook Up

Karenthetoadslayer · 05/09/2014 23:55

Thank you - we have one of those. Smile

I reserved two fan heaters at Go Outdoors; ours is about to pack it in.
