Does anyone have 'a list'

Of essential things to take when camping?

So far I have thought of:
Tent
Airbeds
Sleeping bags
Sheet
Pillows
Duvet (if room)
Blankets
Chairs
Cooking table
Cooker
Kettle
Cups, plates, cutlery etc
Coolbox
Picnic rugs / throws
Dustpan and brush / little vacuum

Apart from clothes, towels and toiletries what essential things have I forgotten? I'm sure there should be more stuff.

Anyone have a definitive list they could share please?

I went camping recently and forgot washing up liquid and scourers. You don't have pots and pans on your list. The most used toy I took was a kite.Oh and you'll need something to carry water in for cooking etc.

Thumbcat · 05/08/2014 09:37

Washing up bowl
Pump for airbeds
Matches
Barbecue/charcoal

Have a look on ukcampsite.co.uk for a full list.

We also take a few trugs, the ones they often sell in garden shops. They pack into each other so easy for travelling and are extremely useful for everything.
We use one for toys for the dc. One for washing up as easy to carry to sinks etc.
We have also used one for water play for the dc when they were little!
The uses are endless.

Lantern
Sleep mats/airbeds
Groundsheet or bivvy bags if you have a tent with no floor at the entrance
Extra/stronger tentpegs if yours are cheapy or there may be lots of wind
Check batteries (for torches/lanterns) and stove gas
Plastic wine glasses? (hate drinking mine out of manky mugs)
Sharp knife, wooden spoon & spatula, tin opener & corkscrew, teaspoons
Something you can chop on? (if you will be doing proper cooking) - we have flat plastic chopping boards from Ikea which slide down the side of the camping box without taking any extra space - and you've just reminded me they weren't on my list, so thanks Grin
Teatowel, anti-back hand gel and/or soap
Coffee/tea, bread, bacon (essential!), cereal and whatever other food
Toilet rolls? (depending where you're going - and one is always useful)
Mess/wet stuff bags (old carriers etc)
Insect repellent/coils
Picnic mat?
Bags for life/Ikea fold-flat bags or folding tidies/storage boxes - great for keeping the tent tidy if you'll be there a while, also good for shopping trips
Washing line and few pegs
Woolly hats
Hot water bottle if you are nesh like me!

Can you tell I am using this as displacement activity because I am meant to be packing? Wink

Socks and hat for sleeping in even in the middle of summer.

SmileAndNod · 07/08/2014 07:04

Thanks all. That's a lot of stuff. Think we will need a bigger car Blush. I'm predicting much muttering and swearing from DH add he tries to pack that lot next week..

It does depend how long you're going for, if it's only a short trip you shouldn't need some of those things and it depends how bothered about creature comforts you are too. DH has realised by now that the only way he will get me to camp is by making it at least reasonably comfortable Grin

Saying that, last night he tried suggesting we don't take pillows but instead just take pillowcases and stuff with clothes to save space... he got the Angry look and was put firmly in his place!

SmileAndNod · 07/08/2014 11:47

We're off for a week and I'm not, shall we say, a natural camper. So yes I do like to be comfy. And warm. And dry.

Thinking camping in the UK may not be the best idea...

shoe whore my list is like that too! Can I ask how long you go for, and do you have a big car? I'm worried that we're not going to get everything in Shock

ShoeWhore · 07/08/2014 12:10

Our boot is pretty cavernous and we have a roof box too! (there are 5 of us so things like chairs/sleeping mats/sleeping bags x5 take up a fair bit of space though). We did used to manage with a much much smaller car We usually go for 4-5 nights.

I wouldn't always take everything depending on where we are going and the forecast eg windbreak, shelving unit, airer are very much optional (would only take the airer if the weather forecast dire tbh)
