What is the youngest you would take a baby camping

And what extra precautions if any would you take.

The day my 3 months son was born we bought a new (ebay) tent and we're desperate to try it out. Just really nervous of camping with a baby that can't yet tell me he's hot/cold or regulate his body temperature. Am I being over cautious?

If he's cold he'll wake up crying - this time of year he's not likely to be too hot so a good time to go I would have thought. Put an extra layer under him (will he be in his pram?) and maybe a hat on overnight.

I haven't camped with a baby so I don't know how I would feel really but I would think as they are fairly easily contained at that age it should be fun for everyone.

On an airmattress beside you is even easier if you're bf. Did the travelcot thing with DD, airmattress wiith DS. Airmattress MUCH easier.

we are taking ds 6 months tonight - first took him at 3 months - lots of layers, travel cot, was fine.

We went camping with friends whose dd was 5 weeks old.

They coped fine.

ps, don't think babies should sleep with a hat on.

my cousin went at 3 weeks.

I took ds2 at about 6 months- he slept really well.

I was at the Big Chill festival last year and Norman Jay did a "shout out" to a 5 day old baby, who was camping in the family camping area. And this was on day 3 of the festival. I kid you not!

I went to a smashing vcampsite this summer, (Dolbryn if you want a good family run site), and Bev, the co-owner took one of hers at 2 weeks , granted it was in a van, not a tent, but the woman had a section! All power to her!

I took mine camping at 4 weeks - my tip would be to use one of those very small inflatable dinghys as a bath - she loved it!

In some ways I think it is easier to take a baby camping than a young toddler......less hassle for the parents as you don't have to keep sprinting after them. Ds went camping for teh first time at 16 months and that was fun for him, but hard work for me!

My mum took my little brother camping in May - he was born the end of April - she worked on the theory that you might as well be stuck on a campsite as stuck at home.

We took ds into such a dump of a holiday home when he was 5 weeks old that we may as well have been camping. Apart from my breasts leaking like merry hell everytime the rain hit the tin roof it was fine - he was so snug in his carry cot or in the front pack.

We took our dd2 when she was 10 days old. She was born in June though so it was quite warm. She slept with her grobag on.

we took ds for the first time at 16 weeks to north wales a few weeks ago - was really hot in the day and freezing at night. he woke up couple of times from cold on first night and second night slept him in fleece body suit and he only woke once and had to be snuggled back down, I didn't bother with hat to sleep in because he sleeps on his front. Had him in pop up travel cot on therma rest next to us.
Would recommend vango baby nightstar sleeping bag (but only two season so this time of year need extra layers)
Go for it - great when they're this young and stay exactly where you leave them!

Go go go, its when they start walking thats a pain when you are camping. I will not go again until DS is 4ish.

MMhare, we went camping with ds when he was 18 months - complete and utter nightmare!

A year later it was a bit easier. He absolutely loved it this time.

18 mths to 3 is hard no matter what holiday you have

Lots of newborns at the festivals we were at this summer,icluding very small,gorgeous twins.Mum and Dad had a sling each.
