What's new and exciting in the world of camping gadgets then?

I do not want the Lakeland snack stand before someone links me that.

Something for cooking on/in/with? Dunno. Can't be a great enormous vessel/contraption as space is at a premium already the bloody dds have gone and grown longer so footwell space has now been compromised.

Something lighting? NO FAIRY LIGHTS.

No also to bunting, chandeliers, weird carpets or a Cadac. None of that sort of guff.

Fancy a thing for 2014 but what?

I have frozen brownies and taken them to camp, but generally, camping is holiday and all about getting away from faffiness, cool gadgets excepted Wink.

GreenMonth · 24/04/2014 11:31

I don't even go camping and I fancy one of these thermal cookers.

Of course, now I really want all the other clever gadgets on this thread, even though my holidays are in a cottage with electricity, a full kitchen, flushing loos etc. Grin

expatinscotland · 24/04/2014 11:35

Green, I got an Aeropress for camping and any self-catering becuase I can't do without coffee.

GreenMonth · 24/04/2014 11:45

I can't do without coffee, but the cottage has a Nespresso machine, which isn't good coffee, but it's good enough to save me bringing (or more likely forgetting to bring) coffee with me.

I probably do need an Aeropress too.

Blu · 24/04/2014 15:58

I have an Unbreakable insulated cafitiere for camping.

HerRoyalNotness · 24/04/2014 16:09

mmm I think I will investigate the s'mores thing. I've been making them all wrong. I've only cooked the marshmallow then tried to squish it between biscuit and chocolate, and wonder why the chocolate isn't all melty. That garlic roaster is genius also.. I love C&B

dannyboyle · 24/04/2014 17:22

I am a new family camper (but have camped in younger days)! Am making a desirable list from this, however can I turn this round and ask what is the best gadget you have and why (birthday coming up and Christmas in the distance......). Thanks

MummyPigsFatTummy · 24/04/2014 17:43

Collapsible kettle would be high on my list of favourite gadgets - saves a lot of space.

Also the gas attachment thingy for our Trangia-style cooker is fab. Boils a kettle in double quick time.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 24/04/2014 17:51

This cooker looks quite good along the Trangia lines but much cheaper - not sure how long the anodised coating would last though:

We have one of these and actually I think this is also a favourite gadget as it packs up tiny but once attached to a gas bottle (and you can buy quite small ones) it it burns like a rocket. Again, great for a fast boil kettle of water:

My best gadget is my campfire grill, an excellent, effective and simple way to cook over your campfire .

I love the way you easiky can alter the height above the fire, or can swing it round off the heat all together. And the raised sides to the grill which stop your sausages rolling into the fire .

A top piece if kit.

I have the small Rebel model , plenty big enough to cook for 4, less successful in BBQ mode (charcoal holder a bit small)

expatinscotland · 24/04/2014 20:27

May we see a link, please, Blu?

Nights are still quite cold here, but man, if we had a campervan, touring caravan or motorhome we would be on the road this weekend!

S'mores - one digestive, few squares of Cadbury on top, followed by marshmallow and another digestive. Wrap in foil. Place them all in lovely basket and roast over the fire or coals.

Banana boats are a great hit, too.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 24/04/2014 20:37

I made smores once and the digestives burnt while the chocolate and marshmallows stayed cold. Very disappointing - no idea what I did wrong.

expatinscotland · 24/04/2014 20:47

It does work better with graham cracker slabs . . .

Blu · 24/04/2014 22:00

Campfire grills

Scroll down on the home page, mine is the Rebel grill. I think Hillbilly has the big Pioneer or original grill. On mine the charcoal pan is easily detachable so I mostly use it directly over the fire. It is surprising how strong and sturdy the stakes are in the ground, they don't tip or wobble. And the steel stake unscrews into two parts for easy packing.

I now fancy the pot dangler but then I would have to buy a suitable pan with a handle...

Would anyone amongst us actually use that garlic roaster? I wonder if it is big enough to double as an orange-peel cake roaster?

Blu · 24/04/2014 22:05

As nifty gadgets (especially those that keep the kids busy) do you all have a Grandpa's toasting fork?

Basically they turn any stick into a toasting fork. You squeeze it together, put the stick through the holes and let go and the whole thing springs tight against the stick, whatever thickness it is. Finding the right stick, whittling it, using the toasting fork - hours of activity.

expatinscotland · 24/04/2014 22:21

I have my grandmother's old Dutch oven that yes, I paid to bring across when I moved here from the US Wink.

shirazplease · 25/04/2014 09:32

butchers hooks ordered. Genius idea! Pet hate of mine having to put my toiletry bag down on the floor. Blergh.

Although, can guarantee that DH will leave one in the showers every time he goes Angry

Slubberdegullion · 25/04/2014 09:35

Well if nothing else this thread has taught me how to make a proper s'more, so thank you for that expat.

More hooks probably also a goer. Will peruse again the gadget ideas to see if something is calling me.

evelynj · 25/04/2014 10:01

I'm itching to get camping - baby will be 1 in July so think we will try a weekend this summer fx

Getting some hooks & love that toaster stick thing-will have to make a camping wishlist-will be my birthday haul this year I think!

Cheers for the great ideas :)

hillbilly · 25/04/2014 10:18

I would second the campfire grill. It's the best piece of kit we have. Yes Blu we have the Original and actually that is ours on their site from the first time we used it. It is a lot blacker now!

Blu · 25/04/2014 15:32

Expat: I would love a proper Dutch Oven Envy

Hillbilly - wow - a celebrity grill!

expatinscotland · 25/04/2014 16:10

I need this campfire grill. Envy

Love our Dutch oven, but it can be a bear to clean. Hot water and dishwasher table is the way to go.

hillbilly · 25/04/2014 16:18

Seriously Expat - you need that grill. It will change your life Grin
