I hanker for a new gadget.

What's new and exciting in the world of camping gadgets then?

I do not want the Lakeland snack stand before someone links me that.

Something for cooking on/in/with? Dunno. Can't be a great enormous vessel/contraption as space is at a premium already the bloody dds have gone and grown longer so footwell space has now been compromised.

Something lighting? NO FAIRY LIGHTS.

No also to bunting, chandeliers, weird carpets or a Cadac. None of that sort of guff.

Fancy a thing for 2014 but what?

I've been hankering after a pie iron for ages.

I have never attempted smores because the first time I encountered them was in a Barney ("is a dinosaur, from your imagination..") video and I can't get over the association, or the sound of those children singing about them.

Cereal0ffender · 23/04/2014 17:54

Slugger you have a cadac shaped hole in your camping life and will not be content until it is filled

Slubberdegullion · 23/04/2014 17:54

I've got hooks but not flat hooks to go over a door. Where would I find a flat hook?

How would the lantern stakes pack in a car do you think?

Have, ahem, two utility tents expat [shame]

The kids love s'mores. We make them with digestive biscuits here.

expatinscotland · 23/04/2014 17:56

One for the toilet/showering and one for cooking, Slubber?

Slubberdegullion · 23/04/2014 17:57

Cereal My Cadac hole will have to remain cavernous and unfulfilled. Oh dear, what a pity, never mind. I will attempt to fill it with hooks and stakes and maybe a new lantern.

Yy expat. One for the loo and one for the cooking.

Or one that packs small but is shit and makes a right tussling racket in the wind or the other one that weighs a tonne but sits there like a lumpen brick shit house.

We also used the basket to do banana boats at the last Scout day out.

I've never done s'mores as a whole thing. I've just melted the marshmallows individually and then stuck them between two digestives. Have I been doing them wrong all this time?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 23/04/2014 18:04

Yes! You layer a square of chocolate on one digestive, then squish a marshmallow, then another digestive. Wrap in foil and grill.

Blu · 23/04/2014 18:10

Buthchers Hooks I put a couple of these in our washbags and use them over shower doors where theere is not enough space to put your washbag down, or it is a sodden puddle, or the hook in the shower for your towel is right in the jet of water....I put towel and washbag in a plastic carrier bag and hang over the door on one of these.

Or just use these for hanging towel on. Can also be used on the washing line for things that need to go on hooks.

Etc.

Slubber, what about new tricks rather than gadgets? Such as baking cakes in half an orange in your campfire? I am dying to try this.

Blu · 23/04/2014 18:17

or this version and there are some more suggestions on that site too. Including a way of cooking shortbread in foil trays that I reckon could be adapted for a pie iron!

MummyPigsFatTummy · 23/04/2014 18:23

We did the cake in an orange thing, Blue. They were surprisingly yummy but a lot of effort for not a massive payoff. A lot of orange juice to drink afterwards though.

expatinscotland · 23/04/2014 18:30

The pie irons are great for a lot of different stuff. Tortillas are good in them, and just fill with what you like. Those Warburton's flat breads are good in them, too.

CMOTDibbler · 23/04/2014 18:37

I did smores in ice cream cones last year. They were really nice, and you could make all kinds of stickyness in them with minimal finger burn/mess.

I saw a great idea for making lanterns by strapping a head torch to a 4pt milk carton filled with water, so will be doing that

expatinscotland · 23/04/2014 19:12

I gave DH an on-the-hob popcorn maker we use at home a lot and take to camp. It's great for evening snacks.

Reelife · 23/04/2014 19:36

I've seen you. Grin

You know you want the Lakeland snack stand. Some of your best friends have them. It's just a matter of time.

profpoopsnagle · 23/04/2014 20:08

We got a luggable loo recently and I love it.

profpoopsnagle · 23/04/2014 20:10

You could get a game of kubb

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/04/2014 22:11

On Amazon when I searched for marshmallows, the "People who bought this also bought..." were Graham crackers and Hershey chocolate bars Grin

Go native all the way!

Fishandjam · 23/04/2014 22:17

Not strictly camping gadgets but - what about a Handpresso or an Aeropress? Perfect espresso (and therefore lattes, Americanos, etc...)

Blu · 24/04/2014 10:47

MummyPIg - I am impressed. Did you use a cake mix or homemade? I would never start faffing about with home made cake mix on a camp site.

Last year I made toffee-caramelised pineapple in a frying pan, tinned pineapple (drained), butter, brown sugar. Eaten hot with thin shortbread biscuits. Posh camping pud.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 24/04/2014 11:08

I confess it was mainly DH's idea - I was largely on hollowing out the oranges duty with the children and other members of our group. As he only decided to do it at the campsite he used cake mix as he could just do it all in one bowl and it involved buying fewer ingredients. (The kids all got a stir of course).

I agree home made cake on a campsite would be a bit much. I suppose you could make the mix at home and bring it with you though, but in that case I would be tempted just to bake the cake at home and bring it with me to share (much as I relaise that is hugely missing the point).
