Dinner Sets & Alternative to Camping Kitchens

I'm looking for some suggestions please. Is it possible to buy a 16 piece (camping/plastic) dinner set for under 20?

And what do you put your gas stove on? Last year I used a plastic container that doubled up as storage. Very handy but it took the entire space of my car boot! I cannot afford to buy a camping kitchen so looking for some MN camper's wisdom here

We bought a small folding table from go outdoors for our gas burner.

I have my stove either on a table or on the floor. You get the full camping experience if you're squatting on damp grass cooking your bacon :)

BHS have some pretty plastic dinnerware.

Thanks, I've seen the BHS ones but it work out over 20 for 16 pieces.

The Ikea ones look good but the store is not that close to where I live.

Do you have 99p Stores and pound shops where you live?

There are generally sets of plastic plates or dishes , 4 for £1 in the Poundshops. We have sets of cheap cutlery from the 99p shop.

Or look in second hand / charity shops for tin / enamel / melamine / plastic plates etc.

None of our stuff matches.

Dilly's Ikea range can be bought off ebay new for a few pounds extra (I have those, couldn't get to an ikea but worth it even at the ebay prices)

I like the look of the beer can shaped freezer blocks.

But I bet they will be shit and filled with water, not gel which stays frozen much longer.

And call me a cynical old bat but I bet that BBQ will warp and rust before the second pack of sausages.

I bought a solar powered colour changing lantern for outside the tent from Lidl - it bust before the end of it's first night.

Lidl is excellent for 99p 500ml bottles of v good bee though!

We have a melamine set from Go Outdoors which is really sturdy - and the whole set is £8.97 atm

CMO please can you link to your dinner set? I've had a look at Gooutdoors & didn't find anything for that price!

I got some pretty strawberry patterned picnicware from B&M, think each part was about £2 for 4 items, so for plates, bowls and side plates it was £6.

Well I think DH is planning a raid on LIDL for one of those BBQs, so I will report back in due course on their sturdiness or otherwise!

Ooh, yes please, MummyPig, for the feedback on Lidl's BBQ! (though I have now mortgaged my life away for the Weber Go Anywhere in which it is possible to bake brownies! Allegedly!

I have realised that the hose on my stove is too short to put the stove on a kitchen stand like that . But I can't fit anything else in the car anyway.

Will anyone be buying one of those snack stands this year?

I was looking at lantern stakes in B&Q at the weekend and thinking it could be useful - not just for a lantern but for a small bucket containing bread sticks or cheese straws, next to my chair...or other general camping uses.

Mmm brownies.... Don't suppose a LIDL foldable will accomplish that feat sadly. I will report back - may be a few weeks now though as not due to camp again until late May bank holiday

Nah, you need a BBQ with a lid and heat control through vents top and bottom. Apparantly.

I've got a previous pattern (checks not stripes) of that Go Outdoors set. It's brilliant. I had been hankering after some Cath Kidston stuff but really couldn't justify the price when I saw those. I was given some pretty greengate stuff and to be honest the go outdoors stuff is more robust.

I have a BBQ like the Lidl one and it's fine. It'll warp if you use it as a fire pot after cooking though and I have to flatten the grill out before packing it away. But for the space it takes up and the cooking area, it's great. DH finds it easy to cook on too. He hates our fire pit.

I'd get the Go outdoors set and spend the leftover money on four Sporks

I then just take a set of normal metal cutlery from home for buttering bread/cooking etc more than anything else. Plastic knives are a waste of time!

When we do semi minimalist camping we take one of these to put the stove on, and then I have a bendy piece of metal that I curve around it and secure with pegs that act as a windbreak.

The table rolls up and then goes in a natty drawstring bag.

What about a folding garden side table to cook on? You know those ones that are wooden lattice and about 2ft square? At least then you can use it at home too!
