I've recently booked our first ever more than a weekend camp trip to France in the summer. We're going to Yelloh Le Littoral in the Vendee. Read loads of reviews before booking but completely failed to note they don't allow charcoal barbeques. They of course hire gas ones for 25€ a week (we're going for two). What do others do cooking wise in France? Shall I suck it and see or buy me a portable gas barbeque to take?

Get yourself a single or double gas stove. They are cheap and also come in handy in uk. We usually have a campfire/BBQ and a single burner gas stove for the all important first cup of tea of the day! Some French campsites have a communal BBQ but don't allow on pitches.

Thanks hillbilly, I completely omitted to mention I have a gas stove (rubbish huh, no wonder my decision making process is shot!) We usually do similar cooking mostly on the firepit barbeque and the stove for kettle. I just don't like it that they don't mention it in their literature but at least I know in advance and can be prepared. Either creating more room in my car without a barbeque or a dent in my budget buying a portable gas one rather than their hire rate.

I believe this is where the Cadac trumps the Cobb. It pains me to tell you this.

Oh how I have lusted after the Cobb, but you're right, especially if my plans for expanding my continental camping experience pan out. We tend to cook on the fire in the UK so probably makes sense to increase the cooking options. I will enjoy the Cadac research! Thank you.

For future reference Bedhaven, there are some sites in France that allow fires and BBQs however they are few and far between. We were on one such site last summer but in actual fact we only BBQd 2 or 3 times in favour of eating out or having picnic style food.
