Anyone contemplating campIng at half term?

Or is it just too cold? I really want to go....

I did camp at new year as a student, but that was then.

I went this Easter which was begining of April.It was miserable even with a heater.Its not the cold it's the damp.What would you do with yourselves all day.Its just too cold and wet and I consider myself a hardened camper.

We are going late November (but we cheat as have a Motorhome). I think we will get a few days in in October too.

It wouldn't be as bad as Easter was unless the weather turns very fast now, I think - I also spent Easter this year in a tent, or at least part of it because I went home after two days having ended up in first aid with frostbite and hypothermia. The site went down to -10 at night and we had snow on the ground, I don't think we're at risk of that in the next two weeks.

Still...not my idea of fun, camping this time of year. Too cold and damp.

The things that put me off beyond this time of year are the wet and muddy ground (the rain this week has been horrible) and dark evenings. We don't have a hi-tech set up with a huge live-in tent porch and well lit indoor cooking and grubbing about in the dark and damp...not so attractive.

Also in the summer if your stuff does get wet you have a better chance of a sunny spell the next day to dry or air your stuff, whereas now we just have damp autumnal air.

Who knew I would be so nesh!

If I were camping alone or with another adult as part of a walking trip and eating in the pub I might do it.

one of the best nights sleep I've ever had was bivi-ing (yup, no tent!) in 6 " of snow on the Antrim Plateau.

we have an ancient caravan, with no electrics etc and we regularly head off in the depths of winter, and our kids laugh at all the folks in thier shiny new heated vans cos we're hard core caravanners!

If you have a modern tent, with separate sleeping/living accomodation then you can do it perfectly well, have air beds to keep you off the cold ground and hard and fast no shoes past HERE rules and it'll be an adventure!

remember, in the words of that Great philosopher Billy Connolly, there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes!

But I did once sleep in a concrete pipe by the side of the road, in a down bag and bivvi bag, over Xmas and NY when climbing in the Cairngorms, and was fine!

Apart from the fact that we then all got dysentry from cleaning our teeth in the fast running river...

I've booked a camping pod for a couple of nights in half term as we only do warm weather in the tent. When it gets dark we can snuggle up with the heating on and watch a film on the laptop. It's almost camping.

Looking forward to it - have been for the last 3 years at October half term .
We have had rain ( but 'jubilee' week a couple of years ago , was the worst rain ever).
We have had t shirt weather too.

We'll be under canvas , with toasty warm beds.

I only have confidence it will be great as I know we have everything to cope with crap weather with us though.

Saying that - I also camp in the February half term with a group of friends. We have woken up to snow covering the tent in the past :-) .

We set going in our van, but the weather forecast is dire!

Have a look at the weather threads. Serious storm with 80mph winds forecast for Sunday /Monday. Take care! Especially near trees which are more vulnerable as still in lead.
