Camping - good or bad?

I want to go on a cheap holiday this Summer either here in uk or in france but havent got much money as Im on maternity leave. I will be going with ds (will be 9 -10 months) and ds 8. I dont like Butlin type places or anything too touristy. I would like to be near to a beach.
Any suggestions on locations, campsites etc. Also I would like to take a tent as I have a big car with lots of boot space but im not sure if a good idea with dd.
Has anyone got experience of camping with young child?

Go on it will be fab!! Go to Cornwall, good campsites will have great facilities for both kids. I loved Carlyon Bay campsite (suggested by a mumsnetter - do a search on archieved threads) we may go back this year. Check oout Chycor.co.uk I think it's called for loads of ideas.
