Sorry, lost post with links, but we have stayed in Lac Chalain off season and it is lovely! Also Les Rousse is beautiful but was a bit cold as it is at 1075m. Interested to hear other places to explore!

we stayed at Le Fayolan. Lovely site & great lake for swimming within walking distance

So you'd say it's a region worth visiting? Lots to do?

Mmmm. I'm not sure. We live nearby in Switzerland and we do find more to do in the alps. I was wondering if others had suggestions for us to explore! It is beautiful, quite wild and uncommercialised which appeals to me!!

That appeals to us, but with enough to entertain children. Places like the vendee just don't do it for me.
We've loved the black forest and a very similar area in Luxembourg. Our favourite place though has to be the auvergne.

Depending in their ages, there are caves, lake activities, waterfalls, climbing, tree adventures, river canoeing and isolated restaurants serving yummy mountain food if meat and cheese float your boat! But you would have to drive to find them and there may not be much else nearby.
