I've just bought one of those Aldi camping stoves (two burners and a grill). Apparently I need a regulator and a gas cylinder. Can anyone help with where I can get these and what to do with them? What do I do with the cylinder afterwards, are they dangerous to keep in the house?

You need to ensure that the regulator is the right kind for the gas you use.
CampingGaz is butane, you need a regulator for butane, not propane.

Butane regulators are usually blue.

To be honest I am not sure how you can tell your regulator is the right one for your gas, I asked in the camping shop.

The gas bottles last ages and ages.

Ok I've found those canisters at halfords but was wondering if I can buy a smaller size? Can anyone tell me how much fuel I'd need for a weekend away roughly?

Lovely fishing shop round the corner is going to sort it out. Knew it would come in handy some day!

A gas bottle the size of the one Po linked to will last about a year at least of weekend camping. Then when it runs out you exchange the empty cylinder for a full one and just pay for the gas.

We keep ours in the shed.

Two burner and grill stoves don't generally run off the little canisters.

Thanks everyone! I am still working out the gas leak test - is this necessary every time we use the stove? It sounds complicated

I have never conducted a gas leak test, nor been instructed how to do one. Was this mentioned in the instructions with your cooker? I only use ours outdoors, never in the tent.

I have found this:

"Conduct a gas leak check.

Ensure that the regulator knob and the burner control knobs are in the "Off" position.
Make sure that both the regulator attachment and cylinder are secured to the gas stove.
Prepare a mixture of 1 part dish-washing liquid to 3 parts water.
Apply the soapy mixture to the fittings at the stove and cylinder, and all along the hose attachment.
Open the regulator valve counterclockwise 2 turns and check for bubbles at both ends and along the hose. Do not leave the gas on longer than 10 seconds. If bubbles occur, turn the regulator knob off and re tighten all the connections by hand again. Repeat the bubble test until all connections are secure."

I have never seen or heard of anyone doing this!

Yes that's basically what it says in the instructions.. So i don't need to do it? That's good news! We wouldnt be using it indoors either

Ours two burner stove does as I was a bit nervous of the whole regulator and hose malarkey, but was already used to the little single canister type so we ended up with this.

I suppose it does go through quite a bit of gas, I imagine the bottles last longer but on the other hand it is convenient and very easy and light to pack.

There is a new fangled Camping Chef Cadac Thingy that has the little cannisters screwed in underneath, too.

The cookers that run off a butane bottle burn more fiercely / heat water faster than the small portable 'aerosol' type stoves. We have both, as the 'aerosol' ones are lighter, easier etc for a short 2 person trip.

We're all set now! V pleased with the stove, looks like it should do the job nicely. Now we just need to plan what to eat
