Breakdown cover for campervans

We now have a LDV convoy self build campervan

It wouldn't start the other week so phoned the RAC as we have rescue and recovery for the family cars, they wouldn't come out as the campervan is too big under their terms and conditions. Sigh.
So had to pay local garage to tow it ( and sort out immobilser).

BUT what no one told me is if you join the Camping and Caravan club(£41/year by direct debit) you can then get a voucher code to add your camper to existing RAC breakdown cover. The RAC haven't charged for adding the campervan to the policy atm.

I had thought I was going to have to pay out£££ for covering the van on a seperate breakdown policy

This is good to know ratspeaker. I will add it to the selfbuild campervan project file I am compiling for when we buy a Transit in September.

Did you do your own selfbuild (or is that an obvious question)?

Yes, we have this cover & joined the C&CC for that reason!

We covered our van via our bank accounts breakdown insurance (AA) - our not very posh account covers roadside assistance but my sister got a flat loader back on her account. No additional charge.

Measure your van now !!!
Then ring up and ask if its covered and ask for it in writing.
Many recovery drivers are now told to measure a camper before they move it as they have a maximum length and they are all different, also ask about the age as many refuse to cover older stuff

Hmmm...we've got a T4 and when it wouldn't start over the may bank holiday the RAC came out to us, and sourced and fitted a new starter motor for us, saving our weekend and therefore making dd1 very very happy Smile. We've only got the standard recovery and roadside cover, no mention was made of measuring the van Confused.

We've got the RAC cover via the C&C club and our van is 7.2m long. Covers it being towed back from Europe too but not sure if we paid extra for that?
