family camping hell?

Well Dh in his wisdom has booked our annual camping week long trip to a family camp ground Shock. He has decided that Dd needs the company and we are not always guaranteed finding a mate for her at "regular" campgrounds.

I understand and am trying with all my might to work up some enthusiasm for our camping trip,it not happening for me. I had suggested dragging one of her mates along with us for a week to our normal type of camping but no one wants their 8 year old 3 hours away,at arse end of no where for a week unreasonable gits. I wouldnt want Dd gone either tbh,so can understand but still not be happy bout it :o

I stopped at a "family campground" a few years ago,it had great reviews etc,I lasted literally 15 mins and left, lost the entire payment. It was like a shanty town FGS. Tiny pitches, blue tarps hung everywhere, gangs of feral kids on bikes zooming around all over the place. My idea of hell. I have dodged them ever since and Dd has been fine hanging with us when we go camping.

Dd is WICKED excited this place has a pool and stuff. Her and Dh are laughing at me cos " nah nah mum has to be nice to people for a week" Blush. This place also has great reviews BUT it is on the doorstep of a very popular kids attraction here in New England.Theres gonna be people and kids everywhere aint there?. Im not going to be able to shut the world off and hang quietly in my hammock for a week am I?

Please tell me "family camping" isnt all that bad COS I DONT WANT TO GO :(

Are you in the UK?

It sounds like something that has to be faced with as much enthusiasm as possible or you will be miserable all week and miss out on all the fun.

I'd be cringing too... why not have a look at the site map and see if you can specifically request a quiet-ish corner far away from the main thoroughfares and 'facilities' so at least you might get some peace near your tent?

badguider Ive done just that :o Ive got a pitch at the arse end of the campsite,in the trees :o

We are going here

Still have no enthusiasm which is unusual for me cos I love camping and look forward to the week long trip every year. We do lots of weekend trips over the summer but just 1 week long one

We go to this lovely one www.wellington-country-park.co.uk/camping-and-caravanning/. Nice and secluded areas but with central bits kids can play in and loads to do in the country park. Bit more expensive but worth it as we don't have to bother with days out.

I know what you mean theoldtrout but I have to say your campground looks pretty amazing from the pictures. You just have to ignore the facilities and let your DH and DD go off and enjoy them. You hang your hammock between two trees (looks like there are plenty) and chill with a book and glass of wine.

At least your site allows fires - over here (and in France where we tend to do holiday-length camps) a site with facilities like that would almost certainly ban fires, which is such a shame as they are the best thing about camping IMHO.

TheOldTrout - you'll be FINE!

I thought you meant somewhere like the family campsite we went to once here which was truly hideous - everyone packed in like sardines, Dads driving huge black pick ups all over the site at high speed night and day, people who took huge trampolines with them and even huger dogs, all on the go all night - and kids playing footie til 1 am every night and their parents enjoying using their UHUs for a karaoke machine...

Great fun for those enjoying it, obviously, but not for the 'get away from it all' camper like me.
