Just back from Brokerswood - Amazing for kids as no longer open to public - just campers!

Brokerswood is a Country park near Longleat, with a campsite. This year they have decided to ONLY open to campers and groups like scouts/schools or those doing activity days. There are only about 50 pitches, so say 200 people camping MAX, so the kids there had masses of room and no queues for the wooden playgrounds or things on the playtrail. We wandered down a footpath in the woods, sat on a bench for half an hour and NO-ONE came past us. Fed the ducks and geese with no competition. It was really strange for a Bnak Holiday weekend. The play train in the actual camping field was always covered in kids, as was the surrounding immediate woodland, but with acres of park and lots of people leaving the site for daytrips, you can always find a bit of peace.

I wonder why they don't want Jo public as well? Surely they wont sell enough icecreams this summer if campers are missing for the day.

We wondered if they wanted to give the forest a "recovery time"? The cafe that used to serve stuff all day now does full English breakfasts for campers, and you can order daily croissants & papers. They were selling a fair few ice creams though!

It is actually a brilliant place to take younger kids too.

Did you have to pay anything else when you got there ie for the train? I'm really tempted to book right now a weekend away.

The train ran 3 times a day (lunchtime) and was £1

Milliways did they allow campfires? - I thought they didn't but someone has told me they think they do, so perhaps you can solve the mystery for me!

I emailed and asked last week and was told they don't allow fires. :(

No campfires but you can have a fire on your BBQ if off the ground. The Kicking Donkey pub is great to visit just up the road, and you get discounts on their food.

This is right near me.

I went for the first time last year for a walk around and it was pretty much just mud - I think that's why they've limited the entry.

The Kicking Donkey's food is gorgeous.

Thinking of this for a night or to in half term - does the Kicking Donkey allow dogs (she's well-behaved, better than the kids really!)
