Monitors

I'm trying to find a monitor that we can use at home plugged into the mains, and then battery powered when we're camping.

Any recommendations?

Surely you'll be able to hear the baby in a tent?

We won't be in the tent, but a little away with a group of friends round a fire.

Please don't leave your child unattended. Monitors can't keep them safe.

Sorry but this made me smile at needing a baby monitor while camping!

Bitter experience tells me you can hear a crying baby right the other side of the campsite. No way would you not hear it.

And why not just pitch next to the campfire?

We have used out BT one with batteries in a tent.

The BT150 takes batteries in the parent and baby unit. It has been superseded now by the 250 I think which I gather does not. You can still get 150s on eBay though.

We camp in a group round the fire but I still like to have the monitor with us so I can hear DD before she gets too upset and because everyone else has children of the same age too and it is good to know where the crying is coming from, so I agree with OP. No harm having a monitor even though you are in easy hearing distance.

I'm not going to justify why I feel the need to have a monitor whilst camping, I am mearly after recommendations. So thank you to those that have given me ideas, and to everyone else, especially Wolfiefan and MegBusset please keep your opinions to youselves.

Wolfiefan, you can't know there would be an issue with children being left alone just because the parents want to use a monitor.

We have been camping on a private site (is no one around except our group) where we gave spent the evenings with the tents in full view. Monitors were to make it easier to know whose children were making the noise. Just an example.

Ensmum, that will be exactly our situation. Wolfiefan, I said please don't make assumptions on why we want one or the situation we'll be using it in.

I had no idea it was also battery operated until after a year of use, after I struggled to unplug it etc etc to move to another room and realised there was a battery cover (that incidentally I had already put batteries into) must have been sleep deprived at the time.....

It is strange how the idea of a monitor on a camping holiday brings out the MMcC brigade. I fail to see how anyone could compare sitting outside or a short distance from but within sight of a tent with the completely different scenario in Madeleine's disappearance. Someone in last month's Camping magazine wrote a similarly hysterical response to an article in which the author had suggested pitching your tent within sight of the bar so you could have a drink. "Within sight" is the key, as he said.

Until someone comes on here and says "I want a monitor so I can go off to the other end of the site and have a beer" rather than "so I can sit round the fire (at a fire-safe distance from the tent) with some other adults and be able to identify which of the children is crying" as ENSMUM says, I think people should stick to posting on monitor threads only if they have a helpful response to the OP's query.

There have been a number of threads requesting ideas for monitors for camping in the past and they all seem to degenerate into MMcC-type responses.
