Rucksack recommendations for DS please.

DS (6) is going away camping with Beavers for the first time in a couple of weeks. Only one night initially, then two nights later in the summer. I cannot figure out what kind or size of rucksack to buy, he only needs clothes and sleeping bag, rain gear etc. I want it to do him when they go away for longer periods, but I don't want it to be much too big now. I did order one online but it's much too small. Anyone any ideas or recommendations. TIA eos

My DS has a Vaude one, which was great quality and very light, but very well made. Jack Wolfskin are also a good brand for kids backpacks.

I think the guidelines for general use backpacks is that they should weigh 10% of a childs bodyweight when full.

They need adjustable straps and should not sit too low on the back, those straps that you can pull downwards to lift the backpack are very good. A clip across the chest also helps keep it secure and stops the backpack slipping and rubbing. I would go for a large main compartment, but it's also handy to have net pockets on the side to hold a water bottle and perhaps a small pocket on the front for tissues, snacks and bits of lego that are "essential camping items".

When the backpacks have too many compartments it's difficult to fold and pack items.

If you go to a specialist outdoor shop, or a store like "Go Outdoors" they will have a selection that you can fill and try on.

Thanks, good to know that the lego bits are also part of your essential kit. I can't get to town with DS before he goes, so need to order online. I measured him and got one I thought was big enough but it's far too small, I could work out from it though the size to get. I'll look at the makes you suggest thank you very much.
