Camping in Northumberland

Hi I wonder if anyone could recommend a site / area in Northumberland? It's an area I've wanted to explore for a long time, but we always end up in Cornwall! This year I am determined we will get up there for a few days at least. I don't know the area at all, but have been looking on UKcampsite at Alnwick?
I'd like to be reasonably close to the coast, but also like to explore Hadrians wall and the various castles.
We have an 8 man outwell tent, and would prefer hook up, although that's not imperative just for a few days.
I am not bothered about club houses/pools/entertainment, but a pub within walking distance is always a bonus!

Hi, we're thinking of doing the same thing, it's so lovely in that part of the world!

Many years ago we stayed at Proctors Stead campsite, just outside Craster and are thinking of goiing back in august this year. Sorry, don't know how to do a hyperlink thingy but you should be able to find it if you google it! It's not far from Alnwick and very close to some lovely stretches of beach. Nice friendly campsite, decent loos but no club etc.

OH is from Northumberland so we visit a lot. We don't camp, but I would suggest that you stay somewhere in the Morpeth/Alnwick/Rothbury area because it is fairly central. You won't be too far from the coast and near enough to visit Hadrian's Wall. It might be worth joining the National Trust as there are several NT places to visit and a lot of the coastline is NT owned.

I love Northumberland and it is one of the few counties in England where you can get in the car in the summer and not get stuck in a traffic jam (as long as you avoid the A1)

Thanks hannahem and bunbaker I did find proctors stead on the ukcampsite site and had bookmarked it as a favourite - so it is good to have another recommendation for it.
We let out NT membership lapse last year as we'd visited everywhere locally and down in cornwall, but I think we may renew this year.
I seem to looking in the right kind of area anyway - so that's something!

It depends on the time of year you're going. There are some ace sites in Kielder Forest, but the midges are awful in August.

Proctors Stead is a good site, I've stayed there before.

We camped at Hadrians wall campsite last summer and couldn't fault it. It's not particularly near the coast though.

There's a nice campsite at Warren Mill which has its own cafe, or it did, and a fantastic one at Goswick sands - Beachcomber campsite - right next to a huge beach and has horse riding on the beach too, but not withing walking distance to pub (unless they have re-opened the onsite pub)

have just checken online and it looks like Beachcomber campsite has closed down (such a shame - have had some fab holidays there) but I've found a good looking one right here, next to Seahouses, which has pubs etc galore.

South Meadows is fantastic. Very clean facilities, huge camping field, some with electric hook-up, close to Bamburgh with its castle and massive, almost deserted beach. Also close to Alnwick, Berwick upon Tweed, Warkworth (great castle and river) and loads of other places. Easy access too, just off the A1.

Another vote here for Hadrian's Wall Campsite.

Although it's not coastal (but within easy driving distance), its set in stunning countryside. The toilets/showers are immaculate - heated with Radio 2 piped through. There's no entertainment on site (heaven!!!).

Can't wait to return again this year.

Ive had a quick look - south meadows looks lovely, but I worked it out that for us and 3 kids it would be over £30 a night, possibly even nearer £40 as I'm not sure what the footprint of our tent is, so no idea if we would get charged more for it - is it me or that really expensive for a campsite?
I think we paid about £24 a night last year in cornwall for an all singing all dancing site with pool etc - maybe prices have hiked up this year?
Springhill farm does look nice - I couldn't get their price list to open though - so no idea how much it is.
I will have a look at Hadrians wall as well - if it's about 20 minutes drive to the beach I wouldn't mind that.
