You won't be the only ones with an 8 man tent on the campsite and you will need the room for the kids inside if the weather is bad.
We used to have a 9 berth tent and there are only 4 of us, but the space soon filled up.

We are also camping newbies, we went for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We have an 8 person tent too and there are 4 of us, as MrsPnut said it's nice to have the space if the weather's bad.

There were plenty of people with the same size or bigger tents than us at the campsite we went to but some of the campsites we looked at online had a maximum tent size or an extra charge for tents over a certain size so make sure you check.

We have a mahoosive 7 man one for 4 and agree with the others that the space its great in bad weather. Doesn't take any longer to pitch than our previous smaller one either. Have fun!

I think you're mad. When camping, especially If it's likely to rain then it's important to have as much space as possible. I'd always buy the biggest tent you can afford.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 22/08/2012 10:08

Outwell are a very good brand so if the 10 man tent was a cheap brand, you have probably made a good call. As EauRouge says, some campsites do have restrictions on size or you might have to pay for two pitches so a big 10 man tent might have been a problem. It still might be an issue with an 8 man tent but I suspect less so. That sort of size is pretty common on campsites nowadays.

Anyway, Outwells do hold their value well so if you decide you need even more space after your first trip, you can always Ebay the 8 man. Or get an extension awning of some sort. Outwell do a good range of those.

Happy Camping Grin

I think it depend on what kind of camper you are, or wish to be. We are pretty fairweather campers and only ever go away for weekends, 3 nights at the most and spend very little time in our tent. We have an Outwell Oakland XL 5 man tent for 4 of us and tbh I think we could manage with smaller. It has a side extension which we shelter under if it rains but we still tend to sit around the campfire whatever the weather :-)

I have a 3 man for 2 of us and am perfectly happy with that. Had a wet week camping a few weeks back and it was fine. We went out most of the time during the day, interesting to hear all those around us in bigger tents (yes, we can still hear you) saying how glad they were to have plenty of space to sit in when it rains. Fine if sitting in a tent is what you went away for Confused, but this was at a festival!

EauRouge · 23/08/2012 07:54

We didn't sit in the tent all day Grin just for breakfast or while we got ready to go out. So the DDs had space to play while I got dressed, packed up lunch etc. It is very useful to have the extra space then.

We have 10 man Kalahari for 4 of us and it was brilliant! I was slightly mortified that we would be the only nobs on the campsite with a stupid bid tent but we weren't at all. The kids shared a room, we had a room, the bags had a room and we had a 'dressing room'. How's that for glamping!! Grin

Hopeforever · 23/08/2012 13:35

You have chosen a good make and it may be easier to put up.

gingeroots · 25/08/2012 18:37

I think a 10 man tent for not v experienced campers will be hard to cope with .
You did right thing changing for 8 man ,will be plenty big enough and easier to handle .
