What kind of gas? Do I need to buy one of there cylinders which are mega pricey or will a small calor gas one with the same fuel do?

I think it depends which type of regulator you have.

OK. I think (not sure) that you just buy the regulator to match the gas canister you want. We went with the Camping gaz regulator and the blue canister which was expensive to beginning with but our local camping store refills them at a quarter of the cost of a new one.
