What do I need to go camping?

Stupid question really as I know I need a tent and clothes but what other stuff?

I'm going with some friends for this first time this weekend and I've not even got a tent so I need one of those too. Am I best to buy one or borrow one or what do I do?

Sorry. I'm a complete novice.

After a tent (and I'd borrow if you can, you might hate it!) the next priority is something comfortable to sleep on and warm bedding. We use a good quality airbed (cheap ones go down n the night) and take our minter duvet. Then you want the basics for making tea and a bacon sarnie in the morning, one gas ring should manage. Don't forget to take a torch and spare batteries.

Also take a sense of humour and plenty of bin liners

winter duvet, not minter. It can be cold at night

A torch, of course!! I would have completely forgot that.

A duvet and something to sleep on are my next things to gather.

Thanks you treblesallaround

courage...good luck, oh and if your coming to scotland twenty tonnes of midge repellant

depends on where you are going.

a portable toilet and some toilet roll would be top of my list!

Alcohol! Wink

Well friends will have the little thingsl like bottle openers and matches I imagine. If you take enough alcohol with you, they'd probably let you help yourself to anything of theirs that you needed.

I've never needed a torch in all my years of camping, although I do have a small led light in the tent for finding my children.

This weekend is going to be very warm at night, but possibly wet. Make sure you have a waterproof jacket/poncho. (I'm also going camping this weekend - regular campers).

I think the key to a reasonable trip is to make sure you lay out your night things before it gets dark. Make your bed, get your pjs out, plus spare jumper or two, and possibly wooly hat, and shot of whiskey cocoa! Start to put layers on just a bit before you actually need to as the evening begins, to retain your heat.

I'd write a list and check things off as you pack them. This will avoid arriving at the campsite late on a friday night a finding out that you forgot to pack any pillows.

I'd also take something and not need it than find you haven't got it when it's urgent. There is a packing list that you can start from www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=7
