dutch ovens

I need one.

I reeeaaaally want one.

I want one for the garden as well as for camping, actually. I have visions of me staring wistfully into a beautiful misty sunset with the pan swinging gently over the fire, and the smell of roast chicken wafting out while I pour the wine.

(Please don't disillusion me, it WILL happen! it WILL!)

Do we need one with legs or without?
Steely silver or black?
Any good brands?

It will go nicely with my essential bunting and scatter cushions and even dh is keen (after his initial eye-rolling and mutters of 'more crap to pack into the bloody car')

A Dutch oven is when someone farts in bed and then holds your head under the duvet. Charming. I'm sure your version is very different

I immediately thought of the other sort too - easy to trap in a drawstring sleeping bag too!!!

I have to say, I am most disappointed in the OP - when you click on the thread titled 'Dutch Ovens' your expectations are tilted in a certain direction and now my entertainment is altogether different...

If it was a goosedown sleeping bag it might not be so bad - they're quite well ventilated

I googled the real thing and they look cool. The concave lid so you can put coals on top as well as below and get an even heat is great. I think if you caught and skinned your own rabbit while out camping and then cooked it in your dutch oven you could probably officially invite someone like Bear Grylls to dinner without embarrassment.

And you could give him a dutch oven as a present

A campground we stayed at in Utah offered Dutch Oven Hay Rides, under the stars. I nearly wet myself laughing.

It depends on what you want to use the dutch oven for. It will need legs if you are going to use it on an actual camp fire, but it will make it harder to use in an oven and on the stovetop when you aren't camping. As far as the color, I'm only aware of them coming in black as that is the color of the cast iron ones, which I definately suggest. I'm not sure if you have ever held a dutch oven, they are VERY heavy. I would also suggest buying one pre-seasoned if you can. Also, you should try to make sure the lid dips inward so you can place coals on top of the lid when cooking, rather than a dome shaped one. Hope this helps :).
