SIMs - alternatives to Dozer?

fatsatsuma · 12/06/2012 12:14

We want to replace our airbeds with something warmer and more durable. SIMs seem to be the way forward. I gathered that dozers were good, but they seem to be sold out and impossible to get hold of. Can anyone recommend a decent alternative? We want something really comfortable - weight and size not really an issue.
Thanks!

Also looking at this. Tempted by the Lidl bargains upcoming but the SIMs aren't very wide which puts me off. Does anyone have the Outwell Serenity double 7.5cm or the Vango DLX one?

we have Costco ones. they are very comfortable and only about £20

Anypointinseeingdoc · 12/06/2012 15:09

I second the Costco ones. We joined just to get the mats and they are fabulous. I also have Dozers but if I had had the Costco ones first I wouldn't have bothered with the Dozers tbh. Admittedly I have only tested the Costco ones on my floor and haven't camped with them yet.

The Dozers used to be good value when they were Fat Airics but they have gone up in price and I don't think they are amazing.

Thanks for these replies. I'm also looking at the vango ones. Don't know much about Costco - will have to investigate.

Another one here for Costco. I also have a Lidl one which isn't as good. I'm really fussy about beds and I have a really good night's sleep on the Costco SIM. I did notice that their design this year is different to the one I have, so I would just check how thick it was in comparison, as the one I have is the same as the Dozer.

We have bargainous Aldi ones - 5cm thick and only 12.99 each! They are bloody great although admittedly I have never tried Sims before

Carla123 · 14/06/2012 21:28

I can also vouch for the Aldi sims - an absolute bargain and comfortable.

I use two, side by side, on top of a cheap double air bed. This counters the bumpy ridges of the air bed and provides insulation, while still having some hight. If the airbed deflates during the night there is no need to do anything as you are already lying on Sims. To add comfort and hold everything together, I bought a 'goodnights all season mattress enhancer' from dunelm mill. Sooooo comfy and warm due to the brushed fleecy topping. The double size fits perfectly as a fitted sheet over the mattress and Aldi sims. You did say weight and size not an issue Grin plus the whole lot costs much less than two dozers.

Thermarest basecamp here, nice & comfy :D

we have 2.5cms ones from outwell, black, non-slip covering. LOVE them. i absolutely cannot see the point of sims and an airbed, that sounds like a humungous faff to me, tbh.

Carla123 · 17/06/2012 20:35

Aitch - For a very comfortable warm nights sleep, 5 mins max of faff is so worth it. I have a 5m bell and before that a Bear Lake 6, so lightweight & minimalist camping have not really been on my agenda since I first saw the pack size of a canvas/cotton tent. Plus, I have so far resisted bunting or tea light chandeliers etc, in favour of an inviting bed.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 17/06/2012 20:37

you must have a ginormous car. i don't get the attraction of sleeping on a deflating airbed, with or without a sim on top. the point of the sim is to be comfortable, surely?

Carla123 · 17/06/2012 21:06

Fairly big + roof box. OP did say size & weight not an issue. The air beds are just for height / the look of an actual bed, rather than being on the floor. Luckily mine haven't deflated so far, and its not the actual aim Smile. That said, I know its probably only a matter of time. The sims bring the comfort & improved insulation. The Aldi sims were such a bargain, that I felt I'd earned the indulgent extras. Plus it really is so very comfortable.

We have these www.campmania.co.uk/Item-2-36-cat-0-brand-813-Gelert_Adventure_XL_10cm.aspx They are 10cms deep, I think they are very comfy, I bought a double sim from lidil last year but didn't find it thick enough for me, I sleep on my side and need the extra padding on my big hips!
