we have halfords ones which I seem to remember had a further optional lock to buy for £20 so we didn't bother but now its going to have attached a roof box with stuff in it I am wondering if we should get them secured.

Ooh DH would be scandalised if he knew ANYONE was not locking their roof bars (though he is a little anal about stuff like that) :o
I guess it only matters when they get nicked and you need to replace them, for £20 I think I may lock them just to be sure as replacing what could potentially be nicked would cost a lot more Hmm

Sigh. I know you're right but this is the first year camping so every week I seem to put a couple of hundred on the card getting waterproof whatnots and the perfect travel spoon and all that. Not even shelled out for the roof box yet. Just wanted a vox to see if I was being anal too thinking I should lock. I guess not...

I agree about the need to 'sigh'

We decided yesterday to get a roof box.
I thought you just bought a roof box and that was it.

Now I realise you need roof bars, fittings, a lock and goodness knows what else..........

There has been mention of getting a trailer - but I have vetoed that as it would be no use for festivals!

I have secretly always fancied a trailer...makes me think of Swallows and Amazons for some reason. Good news is, Halfords have a sale on boxes at the moment. Off to get one tomorrow. I guess it will be good for the Christmas Grand Tour and next year camping will be cheaper than this year. If we are still using money to barter for goods in Europe next Summer.

DH has serious trailer envy, its embarrassing to walk near a Halfords as he starts rubbing his thighs and making mmmmmmmmm noises Hmm :o

I will not have one as I think they ruin the spirit of camping which is having the car crammed to the gunwhales and the DC's sat surrounded by quilts and nursing a saucepan. Also as I need to take a test in order to drive one we will never have one (as I will consistently fail the test time after time :o)

We always, always lock our roof bars otherwise someone could walk off with the whole lot. How awful would that be? We also lock the box onto the bars. I know, the spending with roof bars and roofbox never seemed to end when we first got them. Then, when you change cars you have to get different bars!
