AIBU campervan question

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 16:39

AIBU to not want to lend our campervan to the in laws this summer for a weekend away? (date chosen by them)

We just don't lend it. ever. to anyone. its too delicate/ precious/ hard to replace broken bits.

Also, there as SO few decent weekends weather wise that we can use it ourselves. I reckon our window for using it this year is probably only a few weeks due to having other commitments.

they do a lot for us so tbh, so I am happy to repay a favour in principle. but , would rather they borrowed it while we are unable to use it eg midweek, or when are unable to camp ourselves.

AIBU not to want to lend it for a specific weekend event that they want to go to, when (sod's law) it will probably turn out to be the only glorious sunny weekend when we are free?Sad

it's one weekend out of 50 odd

if they do alot for you I think you should let them borrow it tbh

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 16:44

but fio, its not one weekend out of 50 really, as weather wise and in terms of other stuff going on, we can only use it ourselves for maybe 10 weekends this year (late may to september, excluding 5 weekends when we are not free to camp)

what do they want it for? is it something specific?

we hada tourer caravan and used it from march to october and wore extra layers Blush

AgathaFusty · 24/05/2012 16:51

Are they particularly clumsy and likely to break stuff? Although since you said you would lend it during the week, I guess that is not your real reason for not wanting to lend it?

Was the weekend they would like to use it one that you don't have other commitments for?

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 16:51

yes there is an event linked to a club that they are members of.

so going midweek wouldnt help them, i realise Grin

but just wanted to appear more reasonable by saying i can cope with lending it. when it suits us Grin

i will just suck it up though, as we do owe them, however annoying it may turn out to be, on that lovely sunny weekend!

hmm... re october camping, my brother has a caravan and i think its just a bit more cold weather friendly than the van, tbh.

agatha, it really is our main reason for not lending in general. we would never lend it to anyone else in a million years. and have refused many.

the fact that they are very careful people and is FIL very mechanically minded is the reason that we are prepared to make an exception to the no lending rule.

i guess i do feel more relaxed lending to them than anyone else as, fil would invent some gadget to replace any fixture that got broken!

so... in this case , on reflection, it is the date thats the bigger issue.

but in general its the date issue AND breakages issue that stops us lending

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 16:56

they havent told us the date yet. 'we'll let you know' was what they said. grr

Barndoor Samba - yanbu

Shitty t25 like mine - yabu

:o

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 17:06

is that the point though (is it about how posh it is)? it's OUR lovely old t25 i wouldnt lend it to ANYONE else, ever.
do you lend?

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 24/05/2012 17:17

I would but my dad is in the middle of a syncro resto project :o

My point really was that t25 bits = phone JK and get it delivered. Samba bits = trawl Internet for three years and spend a grand on a dizzy cap.

Dp is the only person allowed to drive my bug Wink

If you're not comfortable, say that you're booking weekends visiting friends up rapidly, then when they confirm dates "Bugger! That's the weekend we're going to the New Forest with Dave and Sammy! So sorry, have you tried x hire company?"

If either has a birthday you could treat them to a Bay for the weekend as a thank you?

whatdyouthink · 24/05/2012 17:23

thanks purple Smile

i think i just need to get that date asap as i may be fretting over nothing.

now, if i could afford to treat them to that i wouldnt be camping in an old t25 Grin

Ours is a bit of a shitter, but there are some truly spectacular ones out there - depends on which end of the spectrum you areWink

What shows are you doing this year?

Babylon1 · 24/05/2012 17:32

YANBU at all Smile

We absolutely do not EVER lend ours to ANYONE - it's our pride and joy, it's our family holidays and it's full of too many precious memories to let anyone borrow it and risk losing it thru accident or any other means.

I'm definitely with you on this one Wink

Hebiegebies · 24/05/2012 17:40

We have any driver policy on ours, will lend to friends and family.

I think I'm so lucky to have a VW camper and love others enjoying trips away.

She is returned cleaner than she left and with a full tank.

Babylon1 · 24/05/2012 17:41

Ours is a T25 too, and we really will not lend it to anyone, it's OURS!!

Not worth an awful lot in monetary terms, but to us it's irreplaceable.

Barndoor Samba??? No thankyou, I like out T25 and won't change it ever!! Grin

PurplePidjin · 24/05/2012 20:58

Ditto, Babylon. Ill save the 40yo seats and aircooled rattly engine for short trips!

Another excuse would be "damn, we've booked his MOT work for that weekend"

Babylon1 · 26/05/2012 22:48

Barndoor sambas cost far too much in recovery truck fees Wink

I'll save my pennies and stick with the T25 - she's never let us down in 9 years, and over 6000 miles across Europe Grin

Kevan the bus and Mike the bug have been towed once each in the couple of years we've had them. Kevan for dropping his water pump on the M3, conveniently close to my dad's mates workshop - a mate who restores vintage race cars for a living. Mike for a stone through what turned out to be the original windscreen. Beautiful spiderwebs in a downpour too heavy to just punch the screen through and drive home!

I'm not sure I'd want to handle anything pre 67 tbh!
