I know it's probably been asked a meeeellion times on this forum, but I'm fed up of deflating, damp and uncomfortable airbeds so have decided this year's under-canvas sleeping is going to be on SIMs. Problem is, I ain't got much money!

It'll be me (5'3") DH (6') and DS (2'4").

We're backpack campers, no car, sometimes on bikes, so need lightweight and as small as possible. Can this be done cheaply-ish?

Thankee!

I think costco have them cheaply around June/July time and probably Aldi and/or Lidl too. Just keep an eye out on their websites for the next few months as they always have camping gear in. Don't get a cheap one that is 2.5cm though. I wouldn't buy one that is less than 5cm tbh.

I got mine from Sports Direct last year, I'm also a without a car camper. First time I tried a SIM and I needed something compact and lightweight. I think this is the one that I have: Karrimor X lite. It's neither the thickest, nor the cheapest but it is thicker than many cheap ones and more compact, lightweight and cheaper than the thicker more expensive ones. I would suggest having a look at some in shops to compare the size and weight.

Mine is definitely lighter than an airbed! I did have a small tear in mine, not sure if it was there when I bought it or from DS mucking around in the tent, he didn't notice when he slept on it!! It mended fine but it was a shame the SIM did not come with the mending kit, I bought a Gelert repair kit separately. I found it warmer than an airbed to sleep on and more comfortable than a foam mat but still a bit hard on my hip as I sleep on my side.
