Municipal French Campsites

We are tentatively thinking of camping in Northern France at the end of August just using their municipal campsites. Is it possible, we are going at the end of August by the way, to just turn up without booking or will we end up driving for miles to find a space for our tent??

IME, it will be fine. Even in the high season, only the seaside campsites (which are often grim) fill up. Well worth getting the Michelin camping guide, I have found some wonderful campsites in there.

Have fun! I love municipals.

Thanks teatimes, you have put my mind at rest! DH and I did a similar trip pre-kids but as that was about 20 years ago I was worried that it had all changed.

Have a look at this website then at least you can be aiming in the right direction. we use lots of municpals for overnight stops and unless they are obviously used as overnighters by caravanners i.e close to N roads, then you'll be fine.
