Around France in June, do i book?

planning three weeks on a circular route through France in June - doesn't clash with school holidays - only planning on staying the odd night or 2 in any location - should we book ahead?
all we have booked are ferries there and back and 4 nights in a gite outside Limoges, the rest is up in the air.
we usually plan one move at a time rather than planning ahead so this would need serious consideration if we do need to book in advance.

are there any really stand out campsites (excluding far south and towards alps) that you would recommend?

any general tips would be really appreciated, never camped on the continent but can't wait

Wouldn't have thought so. If you can ring ahead by one day just to make sure but normally June is quiet.

I wouldn't bother. There aren't even any bank holidays in June this year I think.

I would just check that any sites you've seen are definitely open. The one we stay in the Vendee is a small municipal and only open during the French holidays. (The Ferry prices in August are too much for us this year, Sad so we're going to try Cornwall. Smile)
Big sites will be open though and they won't be busy in June.

I am booking every night of our two weeks in France this June. But only because DH likes to have everything arranged in advance. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I found most of the sites using ukcampsite's advanced map search facility and the campingcard website, their ACSI card offers discounted rates at certain times, might be worth a look. Have just booked a site north of Limoges for one night actually.

thanks for all the responses, i guess we'll set out in our general haphazard manner then and hope for the best.

quenelle i'll check out those sites - thanks for the suggestion - and discounts too - marvellous. maybe i'll pass you amongst tent pegs in june Smile

wouldn't bother to pre book meself, but check which sites are open. June in Brittany is bit early and lots of sites are not open or barely open with limited facilities.
We had a good nothing pre planned holiday the other year in June but had to hunt about a bit some days to find a site.

ACSI camping card discount can be substantial - 12, 14 or 16 euro pitch per night for 2 people inc electric, on some sites the rate also includes 2 children under 6. With the card our jubilee week in Jun comes to the grand total of ?114 for 5 of us.

Yes, we might bump into each other Smile. Have a great time Prunella.
