Starting with nothing from me because the only two places I have camped I wouldn't go back to! One was surfers paradise in Croyde which was full of drunk teens and the other was in the New Forest and I can't remember the name.
So I'm on the lookout for new places so tell me (please) where your number 1 place to camp is and maybe we'll all get some suggestions of new places to go.

www.masonscampsite.co.uk/ in Yorkshire Dales. Beautiful scenery, nice warm and clean shower block.

You see I could rough it for a weekend but don't think I could manage a fortnight without EHU. I've just booked two weeks at Gwithian Farm in Cornwall for August. It has EHU and we can walk to the beach but the only pitch left was hard standing, we'll see. It's August, the site will be full, Oh dear.

High Sand Creek (used to be my very favourite place in the whole world - not keen on new management and it's too busy these days Sad) - North Norfolk

Woody Hyde - nr Swanage - perfect for small children, right by steam railway, views of Corfe Castle from top of hill. Lovely.

If you like loads of space and don't want anything fancy, then try this site. Right next to the beach, you can watch the dolphins each morning from your tent, and then chill with a drink watching the sun set over the sea. The owner takes kids for a ride on his quad bike or pony in the evenings. Lovely atmosphere. Would definitely go again if it were a bit closer.

another vote for Carolyn Bay in Cornwall here - stayed there over Easter hols and it was lovely - nice and quiet but with enough for the kids to do and only 10 mins walk to the beach. Owners really nice too.

That looks nice, MGB - but is the site as sloping as it looks in the picture?

Quenelle - I know the campsite you mention in Abergavenny. It's a really sensitive site ecologically. The site can't cope with extra visitors. It's intended as a small stopover location for groups like Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The owners specifically ask guests not to publicise the site so I'm sure they would be very upset if they found it promoted here.

I know your intentions are to help out other Mumsnetters but would you kindly remove the post please? If you have doubts why not give Mr P a ring to check?

Brockwell Woods in blaydon near Newcastle. Organised wild camping in the Woods - you could be in the middle of nowhere! Proper campfires allowed. And lovely friendly owners. Just fab.

Migsy could I ask about the Ullswater site- how dark is the sky there? Enough to see milky way at all?

Breck Farm in North Norfolk is great. It's near High Sand Creek, which we would have gone to had they allowed open fires.

Has anyone mentioned Welsummer in Kent? We are booked to go for the August bank holiday weekend.

Off to Forgewood next weekend - yippee!

Just got back from a week here near Padstow in Cornwall - lovely spacious and clean site. Has lots of facilities - shop, laundrette, pub, take away, swimming pool, play area etc - which you would think would make it really noisy, but far from it. It's a big enough site that you don't even have to go near the pub if you don't want to. Walking distance to village with a pub, fish n chips and surf shops and also a lovely tea room. Was told it was walking distance to beach as well, although we never went there so can't vouch for that. Overall, we were really impressed with it.

Also, went here in the Forest of Dean last year for a long weekend. It's only about an hour from where we live so ideal for us. Has a shop, cafe and play area on site. Some pitches have their own picnic bench. Feels quite spacious. Lovely site to explore the area from.

Wowo in Sussex. :). Campfires, free range children, little stream, dog friendly, very chilled staff, selection of food supplies, fairly good showers/washing up facilities.

Forgewood, as above (allows fires)
Llanthony Priory in Abergavenny (no fires unless rules have changed) - bit hardcore though - just a standpipe for water and loos in the car park next door. All worth it for the ruined priory.
Eweleaze Farm in Dorset (allows fires).

Hopefully soon will be able to say Domaine de Mathevies in the Dordogne, but haven't been there yet. Great review from Quenelle though.

Clippesby Hall in Norfolk.
The Orchards on the Isle of Wight.

But mainly Clippesby. Super place for kids to roam around, climb trees, make dens. Booked again for next year before we left.

Just got back from Wellington Country Park campsite. There's so much to do for young children. We didn't leave the site at all for the four days we were there and 4yo DS was exhausted and very happy every day. I think it's probably the most stress-free holiday I've had since becoming a parent.

I've bookmarked this thread. Now I'm not a camper really, but the kids love it, so any suggestions on last minute campsites in the south west?
I'd like to just decide to go rather than book and the weather be terrible!
See I'm not a camper really!!

We have stayed at Meadow View in Dorset for the last four years and it is great. The owners are brilliant and the new showers were lovley. There is a big lake on site so if you have toddlers you need to be careful.

Just returned from the Inside Park. Already booked to go back next summer, fab site.

Also did few nights at Red Shoot- yes, pub is great and serves lovely food but I found it very busy, crowded, loads of cars so DS could not go off to play by himself, and so expensive, so that one wasnt for us!
