Starting with nothing from me because the only two places I have camped I wouldn't go back to! One was surfers paradise in Croyde which was full of drunk teens and the other was in the New Forest and I can't remember the name.
So I'm on the lookout for new places so tell me (please) where your number 1 place to camp is and maybe we'll all get some suggestions of new places to go.

I'm very envious! It's very difficult to get DH camping if it's less than 20 degrees :-( Have a great time!

I've been coerced into camping this weekend too. Going to www.greencaravanpark.co.uk/
Non EHU on our pitch either. Yikes

No, Poulay, Red Shoot isn't a woodlandy-type campsite. But that suits us for now. We like it because there isn't anywhere 2.10yo DS can run off to but he can still have a bit of freedom outside the tent because there aren't cars passing all the time. And you only have to step outside the site to be in the forest.

I second woodlands in Carnoustie. I also recommend these sites in Devon

We did 5 trips last year & didn't have a bad one, but it was a tie for first place, between:

//www.clippesby.com in Norfolk
&
//www.carlyonbay.net in Cornwall

We haven't done much camping yet (and I've just cancelled our booking for this weekend, sob) but the best site yet was in Croyde, but not the OP's teenage disaster: www.cherrytreecroyde.co.uk/

Good size pitches (we had a picnic bench on ours, which mostly got used for drying things due to less than perfect weather), loads of showers (bit of a walk from the lower campsite to the showers, though not to the second loo block), and a really nice vibe. After our previous camping experiences my preference will be no EHU and tents/campervans only from now on (although if we had EHU this weekend we might still be going, ho hum).

dontcallme - why don't you like EHU? I've started to think longingly about electric lights instead of wandering around with torches.

Report
DontCallMeBaby · 04/04/2012 13:20

Well, the stupid reason is that despite being a fairweather and not at all hardcore camper, I am determined to keep SOME semblance of roughing it. But I also think you get a better choice of small sites if you're not completely wedded to EHU - so my determination is always to ensure that we CAN camp without it, ie we have a conventional coolbox rather than an electric one, and we battery lights an torches (as well as one mains electric one, which is a hideous thing that looks like it should be lighting up a building site, which doesn't help).

Without EHU you're so much less likely to end up next to a tent containing a telly on which people are watching something featuring language you probably don't want your smallish child to hear ...

That said, my resolution right now is if we ever plan to camp at Easter again we WILL book a pitch with EHU so that if the weather turns stupid we can rush to Go Outdoors and buy a heater.

dontcallme - wondered if TV might be the issue. think it would drive my children nuts - being able to listen to one but not see picture!

I wish I had EHU for this weekend. I've chased around every BM store in the city to get a gas heater to no available. Brass monkeys for us. I did get extra sleeping bags though for 6.99 to go over our mummy ones.

this one in North Wales is fab. Working farm but they do lamb feeding, pony rides, tractor sledging, nature walks to the pub etc. Play area for kids with swing slide etc. It's just over an hour away from us so we go quite regular for long weekends etc. they have a basic shop but there is a big tesco and aldi about 4 miles away. lovely pubs close by as well.

lovely warm showers and clean toilets.

If you want somewhere that the DC's can roam and you feel completely safe, then this is the place for you.

South Penquite Farm on Dartmoor. Best campsite I've ever been too. Only disadvantage is it's 7 hours drive away!

On an organic farm, fantastic warm free and clean showers, you're encouraged to clean up after yourself but this is a good thing IMHO. Lovely toilet block, allows fires. No caravans (they can't get over the bridge) and no dogs, but there's a kennels next door. The family who run were regular campers so knock what is essential.
They also have cabins and yurts to hire.

we've stayed here before: www.greenhillsholidaypark.co.uk/
Its a campsite just outside Bakewell in Derbyshire; a nice 15 minute walk away from the town centre with lots of nice cafes and cake shops and ducks to feed, and about 10 minutes drive from Chatsworth House which has a good (but a bit pricey) farm park and adventure playground. Has nice showers and loos, and a pub on site in case of the dreaded rain...will be our first stop in our new campervan next week.

I recommend Greenhills too, we've stayed there a couple of times pre-kids. It's a bit pricey for me now that we're likely to be going during peak season. We love that area though. Monsal Dale is a great place to walk, and apparently you can walk through the old railway tunnels now too.

Anywhere good in Gloucester or surrounding area?

We went to Rowlestone Court over the Easter weekend, and it was lovely. :)

Woodlands Park in Devon. Www.woodlandspark.com
The campsiteis great, lots of room and clean facilities. It is set in a theme park nestled in the woods. There is so much to do there and hardly any queuing. Also you can use the unmanned equipment in the evenings too.

Pencelli Castle in the Brecon Beacons. Lovely site, very well kept with fantastic facilities and great for the DC. Been several times.

Hi FourArms, try Thistledown in Nympsfield loads and loads of space in the meadows and woods there. Campfires (they bring loads of wood around in their 4x4 mule).

Nice pub just down the road in Nympsfield, or a little farther on there is Nailsworth which has some fantastic food shops e.g. Hobbs House Bakery (run by the Fabulous Baker Boys - the Herbert family) and a great butchers. In nearby Stroud on a Saturday is one of the best farmers markets in the country.

Little Meadow, near Barnstaple, Devon. (Look up on UK Campsites). Has fabulous views, good loos and showers and the best view we've ever had from a washing up area.

It's lovely there and being just over bridge is ideal for those last minute nice weekends - it's so tranquil and beautiful - we rarely leave the field - I practically lived there last summer - the DCs love it
